what time of day do you pump and why?
« on: January 19, 2006, 18:55:37 pm »
Just curious when you pump during the day and why you pump then?  Other than cause you're at work then...  Trying to figure out the best time to pump for my schedule and when I do return to work part-time and around dd's schedule, etc.  Thanks!

I pumped an hour or so after the first feed because that is when I got the most milk.

i pump when i first get into work, again because i have the most milk but also because its quiet at work then AND i can read emails and do reports and still get something done (yeah, one handed typing) ... i go into work crazy early (7am) so that i can go back to Ethan for 30 mins at lunch and bf him... so far so good (bearing in mind that i only started back in january!)
good luck!

I have been pumping early in the morning, before Monica gets up. She usually wakes up at 9am, bless her, so I pump at about 5:30. That's really the best time for me because otherwise it's just too hard to find the time to actually sit down for 15 minutes!

How quickly is breastmilk replenished?  In other words, how closely to a feed should you not pump or how quickly after a feed so you don't get too close to the next one?  I'm trying to come up with a schedule that works around the baby, the toddler, and the work schedule 3 mornings a week.  Thinking about pumping once a day at about the same time of day, in the morning when I'd be at work 3 times a week anyway, but can't decide if I should pump immediately after the feed or wait a bit or what.  TIA

I always pumped first thing in the morning whilst DS nursed off the other breast as it help me get the most milk out.  I have pumped an hour after feed before when I have been despereate for milk to put in baby rice but I only got about half of what I would in the morning.

I could only pump as my baby wouldn't breastfeed, but I did it for 10 weeks!

I also pump first thing in the morning and sometimes I pump if my guy doesn't eat very much just to keep my milk supply up.

I always pump before DS gets out of bed, usually around 7:00am.  I find that is when I have the most milk.  I always still have enough for him to have a full feed.  I tried pumping after a feed but could never get very much.  I didn't start getting very much milk in the mornings either until DS started sleeping through the night (around 7 weeks).

When I'm at work (only 2 half-days/week), I pump when dd would typically be eating.  I figure this keeps my body on track with supply.  A lactation consultant at the hospital told me to wait 1 1/2 hours in between pumping for the milk supply to regenerate more fully.  I'm not sure if that is correct, as I've heard different things, but it's what I've followed.

I've heard that as long as you pump an hour before your baby's next feed, your body replenishes the milk.  I always pumped midway between Katie's first two feeds - about the time she went down for her first nap.
