7 Months - you kidding me???
« on: February 07, 2007, 19:33:41 pm »
Just when I thought we had made it over the sleeping through the night hump...we hit 7 months. I'll rock her back to sleep in the middle of the night when she wakes up screaming, hold her for about 20 more minutes to be sure she's REALLY asleep, lay her down and then the screaming begins again. As soon as I lift her head off the crib she stops screaming and our routine happens all over again. Any thoughts? Pleeeeease tell me this is just another silly, hopefully short, stage that happens around 7 months.

Sorry you are having such a rough time.  I think the problem is that your DD is getting too comfortable sleeping in mommy's arms.  IMO, you need to stop rocking her back to sleep and teach her how to go to sleep on her own.  Have you thought about doing pu/pd?  Do you rock her to sleep at nap time too?  Has she ever gone to sleep independently?

At naptime she does go to sleep on her own. She just had her 1st big cold a few weeks ago and we have gone back to swaddling (she was rubbing her nose and waking herself back up). I tried removing it once her cold was gone, but she won't sleep without it again. You can't PU/PD while they're swaddled right?

I agree with PP in that you should attempt to teach her to sleep on her own at night. I don't think you need to jump into pu/pd just yet.  You should try other methods of soothing her back to sleep before pu/pd.  If pat/shush still works try that.  Pu/pd is meant to be a last resort.  Here is a link to pu/pd info.  You should try gentle removal,shush/pat before pu/pd.  Hope that helps

I don't think the swaddle is a prop listed as one that can't be used with pu/pd but I will check with a prop mod about that for you.

Has she dropped or is she in the process of dropping the catnap?

She's never really done the catnap. As for pat/shhh that just gets her more worked up. Last night we had very crazy and unusual night. She fell asleep at 6:30 (an hour or 2 before normal bedtime), woke up at 9 and was acting like it was playtime. I decided to try letting her work out all of her energy instead of fighting her back to sleep. She went to sleep at midnight, then slept through the night.

Here is our day schedule...after the dreamfeed she's been waking up after 2 AM then starting our silly don't want to sleep routine....

730 breastfeed
830 solids (prunes & rice cereal)
10-11 (sometimes 1130) nap
1230 bf
130 solids (fruit - still trying to get her to eat a veggie here, no luck)
230 naptime (this one is normally only an hour 1/2, but can sometimes go up to 2 1/2)
4 bf
5 solids (fruit and cereal)
730 bf top off and bedtime
10 (1030 if she pushed her bedtime back later) dreamfeed

Looking at your routine, I think you have too much A time before the first nap. I would make the nap 10am and not later. And with the 2:30pm nap, limit that to 2 hours and not more. Longer than 2 hours especially in a pm nap will often interfere with night sleep.

Her nap normally begins at 10 and goes to 11 (sometimes 1130), sorry I guess I should have typed this more reader friendly :)

My friend says that her baby did this before "big events" crawling, walking, etc...

Developmental stuff definitely has a huge effect on sleeping like your friend says. Sometimes LO will show zero signs of being about to do something new and then all of a sudden there it is  :)

Developmental things can absolutly be a reason for bad sleeping. :(

Yes, I couldn't agree more.. my DD is just 7 months now and figured out how to crawl and roll from back to front in one day all of a sudden.  She also has now learned how to push her hind legs straight up in the crawl position.  3 things at once!  My word... it's crazy!!

I am looking forward to things when they cool off.

Hang in there, and good luck!!
