10wk old newbie to EASY 45min nap question
« on: April 02, 2006, 07:55:55 am »
Hi,

I've just started E.A.S.Y today with my 10week old bub.
Previously  I've been feeding every 3 hrs but he's been sleeping in his swing for naps and bassinette next to my bed or in my bed at night. Today is the first day in his cot in his own room. It's going pretty well, he's going down with out too much of a fuss (except his evening nap as he was a bit over tired but I got him down)
when sleeping in his swing he would wake during some naps at 45 mins and make a few noices then go back to sleep sometimes he wouldn't though (usually in the afternoon).

Well his naps are 45 mins long in his cot and i'm not sure what to try first.

Do I
1. Go straight in as soon as I hear him wake and start the re-settling process before he gets too upset
2. Leave him to fuss to see if he does settle himself and wait for him to cry properly before going in to re settle (how long do I wait? 10mins? 15mins? longer?
3. go in at 30mins and do wake to sleep

If I go in and resettle (patt/shh)do I do this for the next 45mins till Eat time?

What should I be doing at night time when he wakes? Try to resettle and if that doesn't work then feed?

Thanks in advance for your help :)
Anna

Hi there,

Congrats on working to get your lo to sleep independantly!

If he is waking regularly at 45 minutes and not able to resettle then wake to sleep will likely work better than waiting for him to settle himself.  It was likely the motion of the swing that helped soothe him before.  If he's waking at 45 go in around 35-40 min. and start patting him gently or lay a firm hand on his tummy/legs/arms...anything you think that would help prevent him jolting awake.  You need to stay about 15-20 minutes to be sure he's back into deep sleep again.  If he doesn't go back to sleep then yes, you stay and try to resettle for a total of about 40 minutes...no longer than that, especially if he's worked up.

Do you know what a mantra cry is?  It's hard for me to describe...but babies do this cry when they are settling down to sleep. It's more constant I think and doesn't escalate.  If he's doing this then try to let him settle himself.  If he's crying in need then pat/shush and assist him back to sleep.  If it is a needy cry then don't wait too long. You want him to know you are there to reassure him.

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah I think he does the mantra cry sort of like "eh.. eh... eh" that does get a bit louder but not a full blown cry and he fusses in his swaddle. I've been putting him to sleep on his side and I think he rolls onto his back and doesn't like that.

Today I wedged him with a rolled up nappy so he'll stay on his side, he slept 1hr this morning for his first nap woke up because he was wet though, he had a different cry I noticed too. And now he's been asleep for 1.5hrs for his second nap :D, I hope this is a good sign of things to come!!

Cheers,
Anna
