Baby throws up
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:09:27 am »
I have to be very careful with my LO after eating, because he burps he could have some of his food coming back. So today he eat abot 6.30 then I burp him and he lies in his bouncy seat for a  little and then I pick him up and all of a sudden he throws up. It just burst out of his mouth :-[. he has been doing it couple times now. Not every day  but maybe 2-3 times a week. I am worried and do not know what I should do.

Some babies spit up often.  And some babies throw up often.  My son sure did.  It lasted until he was about 3 months old and then just stopped.

First things first, know that babies absorb all the nutrients from breastmilk very quickly, so even if they don't keep the feed down, they are still getting all the goods.

Does it happen regardless of what you do with him?  I mean, bouncy seat, hold him, lay on the floor, etc?  Is he in pain?  Is he eating too much?

It could be reflux, but I feel that babies with reflux do it more often.  My son was doing it 2 or 3 times a day so 2-3 times a week I think is fine.  If it escalates then I would worry more.  And my son  never went on meds and he got through it just fine.  Please don't think I'm suggesting it's reflux, it's just the one thing I'm familiar with.  It could also be something in your diet that is not agreeing with your lo.

Check out the reflux board just to make sure, but it sounds like everythign is healthy and fine.  If you aren't sure, see your doctor.  Mom's always know best.

Thanks daisymelan. It just happens. Sometimes I feel maybe I am moving him too much after eating, but yesterday I was extra careful and it happend and this night after his  3a.m. eating again, did not put him in his bed right after feed, but holding him up, leaning him on my legs and this just came out. :-[ Does not seem he is in pain, because usually he is not crying then but coughing, which is probably due, food moving up and down the throat. He spit up little bit this morning during eating, but I guess he still get something because he is pooping and wetting diapers good. ::)

Spitting up doesn't have to mean there's a problem. It's why muslin cloths were invented! Why do you think dads in movies have little cloths over their shoulders? Sam spat up more milk than you can imagine. It wasn't reflux. He was quite happy about it! It can happen early on if your breasts are making a lot of milk or if your baby has a bubble of air or moves suddenly. If he seems otherwise happy then try a bit more winding and no sudden movements!!
If your instincts tell you something else is wrong then see your doctor but if spitting up is all that's happening I wouldn't worry. Newborn babies have weak sphincter muscles at the top of their stomach. It does get stronger!
