LO refusing pureed foods
« on: January 31, 2006, 08:58:44 am »
My DD is refusing pureed foods but yoghurt she likes.  I have started her on lumpier textures and she is doing fine with those. So I tried her with a biscotti biscuit (finger food) the other day, she threw up all over the place, even though she took it from my hands and was eating it herself.  I tried her with a slice of banana, she took it, bit into it, then she gagged went red in the face, and nearly (very nearly) threw up.  Is this normal?  I haven't given her any finger food since, in case she throws up.

I think it is because she doesn't push it up onto the roof of her mouth to squash it, how can you teach lo's how to do this?

Sounds like she really wants to do finger foods, but isn't quite sure how yet! My favorite starter food is cheerios. They dissolve really fast, so even if she does start to gag, it has a good shot at dissolving before she gets a chance to throw up. Start slowly...you can put the cheerio in your mouth or in some water first to soften it up. As she gets the hang of that, you can start to try some other very soft foods, like ripe banana. Also, make sure you're giving her chunks of food that are small enough for her to handle, like cheerio size or smaller. Letting her gum on biscuit is probably not a good idea just yet, she'll probably get too much food in her mouth and have trouble swallowing it. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
