7 month old Motn cot parties
« on: August 25, 2012, 08:57:39 am »
We seemed to have fixed EW and multiple nw and are now having motn cot parties. Can I get some eyes on easy to see where I need to tweak routine? I would ideally like a 7-7 day so DS routine isn't disrupted.

Average easy

Wu 6-7 depends on motn nw length
E 8oz
Solids breakfast cereal and fruit
A 3.5hr
S 1.5-2 hr
E 8oz
Solids lunch
A 3.25 hr
E 4oz
S 1-1.5hr (capped by 4-4.15pm to maintain BT)
Solids 1 tbs (sometimes)
A 3hr minimum
E 8 oz
BT 7-7.15pm

The AT and feed times vary at mo depending on wu-would like that to be more consistent too. I feel like she's having too much day sleep with 3+hr total naps which is leading to cot parties. Wdyt?

I'm pretty confident now that a times are suitable depending on nap lengths as EW and multiple nws have stopped...

Dyt if I limit day sleep to 2.5-2.75 hrs as long as she doesnt get OT that will get rid of cot parties?

Sorry for the long post. Tia x

I think you're dead on with too much day sleep, that's usually the cause for the MOTN parties.  If both your naps are on the shorter end of the range you've got up there in your EASY, then you'd be at 2.5 hours day sleep, which might get you where you want to be.

Just another thought -- if you can manage it, I find that sometimes pushing BT out a half hour or so helps get them on track too without worrying about nap capping -- my ds does more of an 11 hour night now instead of 12 which keeps him sleeping at night (barring discomfort from teeth, etc) but still napping during the day.

I see you got your 36min 2nd nap fixed :)

I agree with Erin's point re: the 11hr night. Maybe capping that PM nap at 1hr would help... Just would take some guts since you just worked so hard to make it longer!

Thanks ladies x we had a pretty good night 6.45-6.30! with one nw at 2-2.20 (habit?) gave teething meds. Total nap length was 2h40 min so a good night all round! Yay! I'll try less day sleep and see how we get on.

Today's plan

Wu 6.30
Nap 1 10-11.30/12
Nap 2 3/3.30-4/4.30
BT 7-7.30

Fx'd this works it'll be nice to have some consistency and 6.30 wu I can handle :) xx

Is she actively teething? Did you give meds at BT? If so, 2ish is when they're worn off, so maybe just pain.

Noo...not actively teething... don't think but I gave before BT around 6.15 and at 2 just in case... How many hrs does med last?

Depends on the med. Ibuprofen about 6-8hr I think (if its similar to mine), paracetamol 4-6hr. I found DS often woke around 1:30/2am if medicated before bed and in pain, mainly because that was when he moved out of a deep sleep into REM sleep and felt the pain, yk?

Yes that makes sense. I gave ibuprofen and she settled withIn 20 mins which is how long it takes to work so will keep an eye on her. Thanks again Bec x

Your info was spot on :) she had a 6.30-7.30 day yesterday so I gave ibuprofen at 7 and 8 hours later she woke at 3!! Gave hEr meds and straight back to sleep. Yay :) I was thinking getting up half hour before she due to wake and DF meds to her so she doesnt wake in pain. Is that ok to do and what would be the best way to do it- syringe or bottle teat?

Yep, dream meds are pretty common while LO is teething ;)

There are apparently dummies that you can squirt the med into... never found any myself though. I'd do it with a syringe if she'll take it or just in a bottle teat with a little water so she's not taking in any air when drinking it.

Syringe has worked well here for dream meds.

Thanks ladies. I've sent DH to track down a medicinal dummy from boots so will try that out tonight :)

So my clever little bunny has just discovered pulling herself up holding tv stand, cot bars etc which means more sleep disruptions right? Just when we had short naps, nw, EW sorted...lol oh well such is the life of a parent.....x x

It's always something, isn't it?  You can practice with her during the day with sliding her hands down the bars of her crib so she can get back down if she starts standing at night.

I'm not sure what's going on...I changed dd cot to its lowest setting since she's started pulling herself up and naps went pear shaped! so I don't know if thats contributing to our current problems?

Wu 6am
A 3h30
Nap 1 9.30-11.10
A 3h30
Changed cot to lowest setting
Nap 2 2.40-3.30 UT??
A 3h10
BT 6.40pm

Nw 1 12-12.10 ss (has been waking at this time for last few days)
Nw 2 1.45-2.45 (gave teething meds which usually work in 20mins)
Nw 3 5.40-6

Today's easy

Wu 7
A 3h30
Nap 1 10.30-11.10 UT??! Had to cuddle and pat then she ss
11.25-12.10 so total nap 1h25. UT?

So what do you think is going on? Her teething situation hasn't changed and she wasn't trying to stand up which is her newest milestone...is she UT for naps hence shorter naps and OT for night sleeps last night? Or could it be something as ridiculous as the cot??! Help I'm confused :(

Sometimes just the fact that she's reached a milestone is enough to disrupt sleep, regardless of whether or not she's practicing it during sleep time.  Though sometimes we got some A time jumps right around the same time as milestones.  Might be worth pushing out A time just a bit to see if it gets you a longer nap.

Hmm that's interesting about milestones...I was hoping to just go for it and try

Wu 7.30
Nap 11.30-2.30
BT 6.30
It's not that simple is it? I'm thinking crazy  :P

No, its not that simple. xx

She does have crazy-high A times for her age, but you really don't want to be on one nap at this young age - too many things can go too wrong.

If she's like my DS, yes, it could be something as seemingly ridiculous as the cot change. What they see when lying down in the cot is very different - the bars look like they stretch a really long way up compared with before. Its not the familiar place we think it is, yk? Their safety zone has changed.

Is OS maybe playing into it a bit? Just something for you to think about: what's the emotional atmosphere like at your place at the moment? I just wonder if its higher at the moment and she may be picking up on it.

What about
7 - up
11 - nap
1 - wake
4:30 - nap
5 - wake
7:30 - bed

That still leaves you with a better-length day and another chance if she doesn't nap well after 4hr. Its something that usually happens around 9-11 months (it varies) as the 2-1 nap transition begins, but if you do need to increase her A time from 3hr30 you're not going to be able to fit two long naps in without making the day too long.

I do feel like its the cot thing- we're going to stay at my mums for a few days (1st time away for dd) so I'll prob keep status quo for now and see where we at when we get back. Wdyt? I need a change of scenery and since she's not sleeping great anyway....

One nap really is just wishful thinking...:) but I think ur suggested easy seems good to try when we get back...x x

Yeah, don't change the routine too much if you'll be in a different environment.

I'm currently thinking night sleep was good last night cos (6.30-7.10 with ew btwn 5.30-6.15) of EBT but naps are weird which as we all know affects night sleep. I increased first at to 3h40 (which is crazy high for 7 month old) and she slept 1h20-UT again!!
Wu 7.10
Nap1 10.50-12.10
Nap 2 3.55- still asleep at 4.50
Will wake by 5.05 if she not up so BT can be 7.15...So think I'll do 3h50 tom and hope for a 2 hr nap and a pm CN.

Dyt a 4-3-2 AT can work for me? x

Ps change of scenery hasn't made a diff to sleep since all naps have been at my mums...So I'm thinking its an a time thing...

That is a good night - 11hr is not an EW ;)

4-3-2 worked for Logan, no reason it can't work for you...

My days are even more confusing now...dd had one nw at 5.40 and slept 7.50-6.15.
Dd woke we at 6.15 but quiet till 6.30 so aimed for 3h40 at again but was was mental by 10am so
Nap 10.05-10.50 seriously UT???! She woke crying but then like your lo wanted to play. I left to ss and she cried hard so I ended apop to sleep (on me first time ever) and she slept 11.15 and it's 12.49 now. What's going on???!! UT or OT? Should I keep to 3h40 at? I have no idea what to do next :(

Overstimulation? You're at your mum's place, right? Everything she sees is new... that in itself is stimulation.

I think you're right again Bec as usual :p. yesterday she had 3h15 min day sleep cos I thought she was OT and then had cot party between 3.30-4.30 (meds at 2) so that was too much day sleep right? How much day sleep Dyt she needs?

Today was much better

Wu 6.30
A 3h35 kept last 40 min really low key in our room
S 10.05-12.05 I woke
A  3h25 low key last 30 min
S 3.35-4.15 woke herself was that OT or UT?
Aiming for 7pm BT cos she needs atleast 2h45 a after 45 min nap

So day sleep totalled to 2h45 min. Fx'd for a party free night x

Possibly just what she needs/is getting used to so she can get to bed on time :)

With DS, once he got used to a certain amount of day sleep or having a nap capped at a certain time to preserve BT, he'd wake then anyway... I wonder if that's what she's doing.

Nw 1.15 meds and ss
Nw 4.15 woke crying?! Cuddled and back in cot. whine/cried ss

Let see when she wakes... What Dyt caused second nw? Should I stick to same a times/ day sleep since we haven't had a cot party (well so far :p!)

So ds woke dd at 5 :/ (were all in same room) but I managed to ssh pat to sleep. Yay. I had to wake at 7. That hasn't happened in a looong time!! So I think combo of low key day, less day sleep has made a diff? For today I thought I'd try

Nap 1 10.40-12.40
Nap 2 4-4.30
BT 7 pm

That would give 2.5hr day sleep (since she woke later than yesterday with less nw) wdyt?  xx

She may just be catching up and settling in. Being in a strange place can do odd things to sleep for no apparent reason. I think your plan looks good. Yay for the 12hr night :)
