Ooooouch! Is this a breast infection??
« on: March 20, 2006, 17:40:56 pm »
I've been BFing DS for almost 9months now and have never really had much pain doing it (except at first of course!).
As of last night my right side hurts SO bad when he's BFing and for about 30min afterwards. The left side feels just fine.
I don't feel full and both breasts look exactly the same (no inflamation, cracked nipples, redness, etc).

Any thoughts?  If necessary I can start weaning, I was just hoping to continue for a few more months.

Thanks!
Mary

Do you have any lumps? It could be a blockage, are your veins the same colour as usually? Do you feel achey anywere else or just feel a bit grotty? Whatever it is definatly dont wean or stop nursing! If anything I would try and get LO to nurse on it a little extra as this would help to clear any infection. Let us know how you get on and if you have other symptoms go straight to the docs for antibiotics or go anyway, its not worth waiting to see, mastitis is horrible  :-\  HTH

Thanks for your speedy reply!

My breasts look pretty much the same-- no redness, lumps, veins, etc.  That's why I'm confused as to what this is.  The right (painful) side is definitely larger than the left but it has been for months and just started to hurt yesterday so I don't think it's inflammed.

The thought of feeding more often sounds awful because it is SO painful on the one side, but I'll give it a shot.

I agree it sounds like a trip to the doctors would be sensible but it wouldn't be advisable to stop feeding at this point even if it hurts as it could make the situation worse or add complications. Even people with severe mastitis (which I'm not saying you have) are advised to continue feeding to drain the breast. Good Luck.
