Poop smell question (TMI, sorry)
« on: March 23, 2006, 05:53:16 am »
Sorry if this is TMI, but DD is breastfed and I will sometimes give her an occasional 2 oz bottle of formula to 'top her off' at night - she rarely drinks all 2 oz though.

A few days ago, she was very distracted at the boob during a daytime feed and I was desperate to get her to eat something at least to get her to the next feeding 4 hrs away and I figured pumping would take too long, so I gave her 2 oz of formula.

She usually poops 2x a day but after this, she did not poop for 3 full days, and on day 4 which was yesterday and also today, she pooped but I must say that her poop was a little more pasty than usual and had an odor of adult poop or like a really bad sewer smell (TMI, sorry :))

The only difference was that instead of giving her that 2 oz bottle at night she had it during the day.  Same amount, just different time.  Is it just coincidence or was it this change that made her poop so smelley and odd?

Could this smell be something else?  It is pretty foul smelling - totally not like her normal poop smell.

I hope you're not gagging right now reading this!  Sorry!!

It sounds perfectly natural.  I know when my ds has formula, he smells sooooo bad compared to when he was strictly bf.

I'm not sure the age of your lo, but I knwo my lo used to poo 5 times a day, then all of a sudden he started going every 3 or 4 days.  It is quite common for los that are predominantly breast fed to change their bowel movements drastically and immediately without warning.  I also worried like you are doing and someone did what I'm doing for you... rested my mind.

I hope that helps.

Formula poo in my limited experience is a very different beast. I think an increase in formula could have made the difference. It all sounds normal.

I agree when my formula fed friends babies have thier bums changed in my vicinity I'm trying my hardest not to retch  ;) The gap between poos would have been because formula is harder to digest but I'm not sure why formula poo stinks more?!  :)
