At what age do you start nightly baths?
« on: December 01, 2007, 16:41:13 pm »
My lo is 6 weeks and Ive started bathing him every other day as he seems to really nejoy it and I want to make it part of his night time routine. Im mindful fo the midwifes advice that babies this young dont need a bath every day but is it harmful at all? What age do you think you should start bathing every night?

I am not sure what the recommendations are - I started doing it every day at about 3 weeks old as I wanted it to be part of our night time routine - and Katie has always enjoyed her bath!

We did daily baths from a very early age too. I think "they" don't suggest daily baths as a lot of the "baby" products available are actually quite harsh and can dry the skin out - especially anything that foams/bubbles. My LO developed eczema and we actually began bathing twice a day which is fine as we have emoilients in the bath and he is well creamed after - lovely skin now! The eczema on his face cleared up as soon as we stopped using the Johnsons baby shampoo ::) - I loved that smell too!

We didn't use any products though until very recently - for the reasons Lolly gives

we started at 6 weeks and it was the best thing we did- got dd into a bedtime routine so quickly and within a couple of days she was settling so much easier as she "knew" it was bedtime.
Definitely agree with pp's re being careful with bath products- I have always put lotion on dd after her bath to keep her skin lovely as she has dry skin prone to eczema.

Yep, Luke had daily baths from day one. He loves his bath and even knows when it's coming up to bath time as he will grab his changing mat and point up the stairs!
We also put lotion on his skin after as well for all the reasons above and now that he's nearly two he helps to rub it into his skin!  ;D

hmmm.... daily baths started around 2 or 3 weeks old.... although it should have probably been called daily splashes since i did not use soap everyday (for all the reasons PPs have mentioned) :)

Yup, we did daily baths from day one as well.  We were told that we should.  These are the reasons that we were told.  1  Clean under chin and any other fold of skin daily.  Warm water only for the first few weeks.  2. Baths are important to care for genitals.  We were told to use mild baby soap every other day.

Harvey is 2 and a half and still has a daily bath!! His skin is perfect so Im not worried but was only thinking yesterday that it would be easier not to do it every night, esp whilst Im heavily pregnant!! Trouble is he does seem to need one most days!! Hes a messy little thing!! ;D ;D

Well I gave him another bath last night so that's 2 nights in a row. I think Ill just go ahead and start it every night, he seems to like it (well he doesn't cry) and hopefully it will symbol bedtime for him. I use a tiny bit of shampoo on his hair but no soap or wash as that's what I was told.

I know what you mean about needing a bath daily.  I have a 3.5 yr old and he sweats like a man.  He can really work up a sweat and a stink by the end of the day. :D  My 18 month old seems to be following in his brothers foot steps in this way.  I find that forgoing the nightly bath is not an option.

I too am quite preg. I find on the days when I really don't feel like scrubbing those little bodies I just make sure I get a really good rinse done (head and all)  I also sometimes put a little soap right into the water so they come out smelling clean at least.  My older child I encouraged to wash himself towards his second birthday b/c I was 9 month preg. then and I really couldn't do more than wash his hair w/o feeling achy and out of breath (darn enormous preggo tummy) ;D
