a terrible eater now?
« on: October 24, 2007, 23:50:56 pm »
what do i do with him?  my ds turned 1 today and in the last month gotten VERY picky!  he used to eat anything we gave him but now he shakes his head no, cries and won't open his mouth at all.  He will eat toast and yougart some days but still he eats so little now, he nibbles on a few puffs and that's it.  Today for breakfast was a bottle when woke then few puffs, lunch he only ate a few sponfuls of applesauce, 1 small animal cookie and a few broken pieces of a bun, at dinner was a homemade oatmeal cookie, a few spoonfuls of apple sauce.  I gave him before bed a few mins ago a pack of the friut pieces from gerber for toddles things.  That's it for the day and then in 30min he will get a bedtime bottle.  Why is he refusing to eat now?  or when he does it's a nit pick thing.

Totally normal toddler behavior ;D, although that doesnt make it any easier to take right?

Just keep offering the healthy choices and he will eat what and how much he wants, really that is all you can do.  How many bottles does he have?  Is it formula or milk?  How many ounces all together?

Oh yes and happy birthday to him ;D

That happened to us and I knew it was a toddler thing, but I was still concerned.  He then went on to get 6 teeth in 6 weeks.  :o He did resume back to his hearty appetite after though, although he has his normal picky, I'm too busy to eat moments here and there!

thanks for the b-day wishes!  He has 2 8OZ bottles a day maybe 2oz less of MILK.  I just find that 90% of the food i am throwing out and it's so costly. He won't eat our food wither anymore, not even mashed potatoes.  I felt around his mouth and don't feel any new ones coming in either?

So he is having 30 ounces of milk/forumla per day?  That may contribute to him not eating as much.  Can you scale that back a bit?

no it's 16 oz max.  i give him a 8oz bottle when he wakes up and a 8oz bottle before bed.  sometimes he only drinks 7oz in each. so 14 oz - 16 oz a day max!  during the day i give him water or juice in a sippy.  sorry if it looked like 28oz but it was (2) 8oz. ;)

Hi

We seem to be having a similar problem. DS used to be an awesome eater then about a week ago started getting very picky. I've been very busy this last month with Xmas shopping and prep for DD who is due 11 Dec, so I guess I have been quite slack with snacks and so forth, giving him starchy snacks, grapes and fruit bars whilst we're out. All of his snacks are healthy with very little sugar and if there is sugar then it's non refined or fruit sugar. He enjoys healthy food - even tried testing to see which he prefers and he opts for the 'good' one (phew!)

Anyway, back to the point. He's stopped eating really. He has a fruit 'squeezie' when he wakes (we used to give him 5oz of formular but had sleep issues so got rid of it away from sleep completely), then about 30 mins later has his bottle. An hour so later I serve up breakfast which he nibbles at for 3o mins but leaves most of. Snack at 1030 before 'PM' nap which is around 11 - 12 for 2 hours (this is a new nap since we lost the AM nap a week (coincidence??) ago). He has lunch a short while after he wakes then 5oz milk at 3. Snack again at 4.30, dinner 6/615, bath 7 and 6oz bottle before he goes down. Should I cut snacks completely until he starts eating his meals??

He LOVES his bottle of milk but maybe I should try cutting one of them, what do you think? With DD on the way I want to get him as settled as possible in the routine he'll follow for a while. We spent a couple of weeks sorting out his sleeping. We went to Dr who said he can't see any teeth (despite DS only having his 4 front ones at 16 months!), but maybe it's that.

I am now being very careful abotu when and what he gets for snack. When he sayss he's finished his meals then  I let him down - don't want to pander to fussiness or make an issue of it. I don't substitute his meals with anything else - if he doesn't eat what he's given then he doesn't eat...is that awful!??! Last thing I want is to see him develop into a fussy eater through accidental parenting and worry! But I AM worried!!! We don't give him attention when he's throwing things about, he knows not to throw things so if he's doing it it's for attention (you should see his face when he's about to 'give it a go'!!). I praise when he eats well and properly.

He's sleeping fine through the night and at naptime. Do you reckon just leave it and see where it goes and if it's still an issue in a week or 2 go to the Dr?? Or just leave it period and assume it'll sort out when he's ready?! Aside from not eating he's a really happy boy!

Advice, suggestions or experience very welcome! Thanks for listening x

Scrub that! Bionic eaing boy is back - I started being a little more careful with his snacks and not giving him anything an hour before a meal and now he's scoffing it down.

Welcome to the fickle world of the toddler diet!

I reckon eating habits are THE most frustrating part of raising a toddler. Our little girl was the same as your lo's...used to love her vege's, enjoyed trying new foods then one day it all stopped!

She's now 2 and a quarter and we still worry about what she doesn't eat! Even thought I know she's getting the nutrician she needs and is putting on weight and is healthy it still frustrates me that every dinner time she will only eat a handful of things!

Honestly the only thing that has eased some of my worries is that she seem's to eat like a trooper at daycare (peer group pressure no doubt) and will have all types of different foods that she won't eat at home.

Funny little beings aren't they!?
Incredibly, not only has he started eating again but he's shovelling it in. Even olives and stuff you wouldn't expect them to even entertain. Ups and downs I suppose. I wonder what next week will bring!

My neice wouldn't eat anything but toast and would only eat if her Mum literally fed her - even at 4 years old! Would drive me insane, in fact it did when I minded her for 6 weeks. In the end we used that fail-safe catch-all the 'sticker chart'! She got a sticker if she ate a good amount of the meal and at the end of the day if she'd eated ALL her meals nicely then she'd get another sticker - total of 4 over the day. Mum had knack of giving her snacks 30 mins before a meal or awarding her with sweets which didn't help things. I had to laugh one day when Mum even asked if she could stick the stickers on instead of LO! Incredible - totally took her award away! Anyway, apparently she eats well now so all was not lost!

although I know it is normal; it is totally reassuring to ready all of your situations. My 14 mo old would eat anything and now it is a game for my husband and I to find the food he will eat this week. SOmetimes, there is some nutritional value (fruit and cheese) and other times it is animal crackers!!! It is so frustrating.
