Transition from purees to lumps
« on: May 02, 2010, 16:05:01 pm »
Help required  :-\

My LO is 9mths (6mths corrected) and i need to get him to start taking lumps but have had no luck, my HV says to make his food thicker and gradually go from there.  He loves his food thick but am now thinking that i need to try and start to give him lumps.

i make my own food for him so i need some ideas on how best to blend it up as well.  he hates baby food from jars and just wont touch them.

He is still being fed in his bouncy chair as he is behind in his development so cant try finger foods yet.

Is he holding his head up properly yet? Can you put him in a high chair and prop him up with towels/ cushions around him so he is upright? To be honest I would be reluctant to give lumpy food if he isn't fully upright as they need to be able to lean forward to spit out any lumps they can't handle. Eating recline can be a choking hazard :-\.

My DD (and DS before her) has had a combination of jars, my food and finger foods from the start. I made the puree thicker and then mashed things rather than pureeing then started chopping rather than mashing to increase the texture/ lumps. I try not to have liquidy food with lumps in as they can find that confusing and don't know if they are drinking or chewing, I find thicker textures with bigger bits works better.

It must be difficult - let us know how you get on as the advice may be useful for other mums. I was really lucky, mine were both sitting unaided by 5 months so the only problems we had with highchairs is that they were a bit small for them - they were propped in with towels/ cushions to stop them sliding down!

When my dd was young and we switched from puree to lumpy food I used to partially blend it with a hand blender. So, I'd take, say, pasta, some steamed veggies, and a cube of pureed veggie (as my "sauce") and chicken cut up in tiny pieces, and I'd blend them so that the mix would be very lumpy and not liquid but not in entirely "firm" form.

Adding overcooked chopped pasta to purees worked well for us.
