I've always struggled to get my DS to BF much during the day - he's far too interested in the world around to spend time feeding. But since introducing solids his interest has waned even more. I'm a little concerned that he's not getting enough milk. His routine looks like this:
6.30 - 7 - BF
8 - cereal with fruit - prob gets 2 oz of formula with cereal
9.15 - Nap for 1 1/2 hours
11.15 - at most 2 or 3 oz of formula but is still obviously hungry
11.30 - solids -
1.30 - snack of fruit and maybe a bit more formula
2pm - nap of 1 1/2 to 2 hours
4pm - BF - takes very little
4.45 - solids - usually veg and rice - gets 2oz of formula here
6.30 - BF
10.30 - am still doing dream feed cos he's not sleeping through (never has)
He usually wakes once at night for a feed.

At his recent 7 month check his weight has slipped a centile. But he's very happy and active and really enjoys the solids.

Does this all sound OK? Or do I need to cut back on the solids to try and get him to BF more? My instinct is that he's fine, but would like other opinions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!

I've been going through the exact same problem with my DS over the last month (he's a week away from being 8 months).  It was suggested to be that I cut out one of his day time milk feeds.  Reducing solids didn't seem to help.  He too loves his solid foods and is already eating sandwiches and baby pizzas (at nursery - I'm a bit more conservative and stick mainly with purees!)

I've posted my routine today under 'Does my 3-bottle routine look OK?' thread.  Don't know if it'll help, but might be worth a try!

Hope you get sorted!

It looks like he is getting alot of solids in the afternoon and that is why he isn't interested in the BF. I would cut out that 1.30pm snack and move that 11am BF al little later and see how he goes with that afternoon BF. So you could aim for:

6.30 - 7 - BF
8 - cereal with fruit - prob gets 2 oz of formula with cereal
9.15 - Nap for 1 1/2 hours
12 - at most 2 or 3 oz of formula but is still obviously hungry
12.30/1 - solids
2pm - nap of 1 1/2 to 2 hours
4pm - BF - takes very little
4.45 - solids - usually veg and rice - gets 2oz of formula here
6.30 - BF
10.30 - am still doing dream feed cos he's not sleeping through (never has)
He usually wakes once at night for a feed.

If you are finding after trying this that he is still not taking much at the the 4pm BF then maybe it is time to drop it and move that 12pm BF to a little later or just before the nap.
