Can you just pat instead of pat/shhh if baby gets more reved up by the shhing?

Agreed.  I have never patted as my lo sleeps on her back swaddled.  Instead, I placed my hand on her chest/tummy and do tiny jiggles.  For a while shushing was good, then it wasn't, then low murmuring in her ear worked, then it didn't, then stroking her hair worked, then it didn't :)  Point is, I just soothed her with whatever method worked best for her!

i have done everey variation and it gets easier to see what your lo wants that time - we do some shhing and a hand on back, sometimes patting with no shh and sometime both. for shhing to be effective it nheeds to be louder than baby so if they are actually crying or grizzling etc you need to be louder than them or it does not have any effect on them.
