Breastfeeding pillows

O.K. so D day is fast approaching and I am starting to think about making breastfeeding more successful this time around!   I remember with dd especially just after the c-sectio try8ing to use a pillow to support her and having it slip out or not be in quite the right position.  So, I am wondering, do those breastfeeding semi-circular type pillows really help.  Is it worth investing in one?  I can't believe the price that some of them go for.  I have seen 1 for $120 AU   but I ma guessing the ones going for $30 - $40 would be just the same  but not a brand name??

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

I compared the lower priced ones vs. the higher and ended up with the higher priced one- I found the inside cushion was softer, the outer fabric was softer (and it came in a colour to match my decor ), it was also slightly larger (but this is in Canada so it could be very different from the ones you are looking at). I first tried a regular pillow and couldn't balance my lo as well (I too had a c-section). I found the semi-circ pillow worked great when she was 6 pounds and now that she's 11 weeks I can sit her in one side towards me and prop her head up (so she's more in a sitting position when feeding). I also use it during activity time- I prop her up in the circle as she hates to always be flat on her back. When she gets bigger, I'll be using it the other way- to prop her body up, facing out. I figured at the price of it- make it multi-functional.

I didn't have a c-section but I found the pillow to be extremely helpful for breastfeeding as well as for A time!  In Canada the ones I like go for $29.99 and are fairly sturdy.  I received one for a baby shower gift that was smaller and floppier and I didn't like it as much as the firmer bigger ones.  I have seen the $29.99 ones at Babies R Us, Sears, and Walmart.  I am pretty sure that I have seen them in the US as well.  I could try and find a link for the website if you are interested.  Where abouts do you live??

I've used the Bobby pillow (Babies r Us) all along. I recieved as a shower gift with my DD, lent it to my sister for her baby, and using it again. I use it for almost all nursings at home except when lying on side in bed. My DH uses it when holding baby in lap. I also use it to prop DS up while he is learning to sit or prop him over it for tummy time. It has gotten so much use....and its machine washable!!

I've tried a few different kinds. Nothing stands out as being extra special. I even have one that is home-made (by my midwife) and wonderful. When they are tiny, it helps to prop another pillow under the nursing pillow to get them up to breast height.

Your lactation consultant in the hospital can hopefully suggest more comfortable positions for nursing after a c-section. Or maybe some mommies on here?

I have tried two differnt types, both in the low price scale.  I found both worked well.  One had ties on the end to tie around your back, but i found them a nuisance...  I just ended up tying them up and ignoring them. (not too sure why i didn't just cut them)

Both were pretty firm and I thought they helped me out... better than organizing different pillows each time.

Thanks all.  I'm off shopping today.  Living in Western Australia means the choices are few and far between unless I order of the net and pay a fortune for postage    So I'm going to check out the baby shops first and see what is available!!

I'm not sure if you'll read this before heading to the stores, but I love my pillow. It is called "My Brest Friend" and it is great. I don't know how well it would work immediately post c-section since I didn't have one. The reason I like it more than the Boppy pillow is because it has a latch that will hook the pillow around your midsection. I found that the Boppy pillow kept slipping down and I was struggling to keep it in place and latch my daughter. Now, at 8.5 months old, we still use the pillow when we are home. It is just so comfortable.
