Is it OK to start yogurt and dairy at 8 months??
« on: August 28, 2006, 16:58:10 pm »
Hi everyone,

My dr advised us to 'hold off' on introducing yogurt until after LO is 1 year old.  However, we are going to Mexico in November and wanted to start her on yogurt before that to try to help any tummy troubles.

Also, do we need to wait until 1 year old to give any dairy?

Thanks so much!

Thanks for your quick reply....

What constitutes hard cheese?   I think of soft cheese as cream cheese and brie.  Am I on the right track?  We have no lactose intolerance that I know of, but when the dr said to wait, I wanted to get someone else's experience.

I was told by my doctor to avoid most soft cheeses (ie. Brie) before 12 months because they are unpasteurized and you run into the risk of listeria infection.  My doctor also recommends introducing yogurt and cheese around 9 months.  Check with your doctor to see what they recommend. No harm in asking.

Started hard cheese like cheddar at about 7 months and yogurt at 7.5 months. Soft cheese like cream cheese is ok, but not Brie etc because of them being unpasteurized.  Go for full fat yogurt. Enjoy your trip!

Just started our ds on yogurt one week ago and he was 8 months yesterday.  Are going to wait a little on cheese but have heard the same as others - hard cheeses (grated is good to start), cream cheese and those little baby bels are good ones to use.  Also, cottage cheese (great source of protien and a good finger food).  Found a very good brand of baby yogurt in Canada by Dairyland that is available at Safeway and Walmart.  There are 8 cups, two of each vanilla, banana, apple and peach for about $4.50 and there is no sugar added, sweetened with fruit juice and fruit puree and made with whole milk.  Not organic, which is my preference but one of the better yogurt options I've come across for my lo!
