Is this weird
« on: December 16, 2007, 04:39:31 am »
My dd, 20 months old, will still usually only eat veggies in pureed form.  Is that weird?
I personally don't mind as long as she's getting her veggies, iykwim but now that she's approaching two I wasn't sure if this was still on ok thing to be encouraging. When we do have dinner with her and have veggies we give some to her of course but she doesn't ever really want to eat them.

Should we be pushing the 'real' veggies more or is it ok to keep giving her pureed veggies?

I'd keep offering the grown up veggies too, but personally I'd be delighted she'll eat veggies in any form and let her have the purees.

I agree! She'll take to them eventually if you keep offering.

Are you pureeing them yourself?  If so, you could gradually start making them less smooth and leave a few more lumps in them and maybe she'll start to get used to them that way.

My DS is similar...he's getting better but will only eat some veggies.  The other thing that has helped is putting some type of "sauce" on them...cheese, ketchup, seasoning, salad dressing, etc.

Definitely agree with the pp "sauce"...I used to give ketchup (she loved it and still does) and show her how to dip.  Before you know it she'll be dipping anything she can and eating it too!  And you'll be thrilled!!!

Riley adores his veggies in all forms, one of the few consistent things he will accept!
I still give him pureed sweet potatoes and squash he prefers them this way. The other veggies he will eat any old way. I am fine with this. If I thought he had issues with chewing etc, I would be concerned, but I know for Riley it is just a preference, and I am happy at going along with it.

Hey, tomato ketchup is a veggie, isn't it? ;) ;)

I agree with pps - keep up with the purees if you like, at least she's actually eating some. But do continue to put them on her plate as you eat them. She will eventually start to try them, and dipping sauces are a cliche, but for toddlers, they work :D

We also make a big deal in this house of making meals you can't avoid the veggies - for instance tonight, we had lasagne - the (tomato) sauce had mushrooms, courgettes, yellow peppers and onion in it. I cut them up small enough that they are unavoidable (unpickoutable ;)), but large enough that they are not hidden - I tell him what's in there, so he gets used to eating veggies in his 'normal' diet.

hth :)

Getting the girls involved in food preparation really helps too - if Freya has helped to cook something she's so much more inclined to eat it! At 3.5 she can peel potatos and carrots for me, squash garlic, mash and stir things, open tins with a tin opener, sprinkle in herbs, and she always wants to eat the things she's cooked! Eryn, 18 months, stands alongside her fascinated, wishing she was just that bit taller so she could join in too!

Thanks for all the ideas and reassurance ladies.  I really appreciate it.  :D
Grace loves bar-b-que sauce, ketchup and ranch so I will have to try that.   ;)
