2nd birthday party ideas please!!!
« on: March 07, 2008, 03:42:49 am »
My son is turning two in less than 2 months.  I was thinking of celebrating his birthday in daycare but there are a couple of kids that do not eat sweets ie. cakes, cookies.  Does any one have any suggestion as to what I can serve instead for  the party?  Something simple and if possible that I can buy instead of preparing myself.  Thanks

Popcorn - microwave bags are easy. If the daycare has a microwave they can do it there, or you can nuke a couple bags and then bring them.

Apple slices - we have a corer/slicer that makes 8 apple slices (or pear slices) in a flash. (It's what we brought to J's classroom Valentine's Day party instead of the sweet stuff, and they got DEVOURED! :)

Bananas cut in half (keep the peel on till ready to serve).

Cheap party favors from some place like Party City (if you have something like that near you) or maybe Michael's.

Carrot sticks with dip - you can often get that at your grocery in a box. Carrots and cucumber slices also dip well in guacamole - YUMMY!!!!

Raisins - our groceries also carry multi-packs of tiny boxes of raisins for packing in lunches.

Veggie chips/sticks.

Dried fruit, like papaya or mango; can often find this at the grocery store too. (Note: these are usually sweetened, so the parents who have issues with sweets might also have a problem witht he added sugar.)

YoBaby yogurt cups - you can buy them in 6-packs, I think. (Again, they often have added sugar, but at least I think it's organic so not highly processed.)

Cheese and crackers. Cheese sticks too!

(I confess to being a parent who is kind of a sugar Nazi, so I have lots of these ideas!)

dried fruit mixes, and I think Deb's idea of yogurt is great, yogurt tastes fantastic, you could even have frozen yogurt sticks or some such.

I made little boxes up for each child so there was no serving or any issues like that, each one had a decorated lid for the child which they could then take home, and had their take home bag in it.  (I got cheap foil containers with cardboard lids that take away places use).  inside I did fruit, raisins, veg sticks, cheese, bread sticks, yoghurt pouch, pitta sandwiches with ham, cartoon of fruit juice and a few cocktail sausages.  then I made up fruit smoothy lollies - make a fruit smoothy and pour it into moulds and hey presto.  and of course there was cake.  no one missed the lack of sweets/chocs/biscuits and the parents were pleased their kids weren't hyper when they went home.  hth  (oh and the great thing was that what wasn't eaten was just put into a black sack at the time and thrown away - instant clearing up!)
