My LO1 absolutely *needed* a dummy as a baby and transitioned nicely into it being a comfort item. We have a firm rule that he only ever used it for sleeping (in his cot) so it hasn't been an issue in that way.  I also don't remember ever having to run in to replug,  certainly that's not something we ever did.

Thanks anna, that's reassuring!  Everything has seemed much more manageable with the dummy,  I hope it works for us to help us through the early months :)

It is a comfort thing for them, you know, we have cups of tea and so on, it's fine for them to have something too. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.  There are folks with strangely strong opinions about other people's use of dummies!

I'm quite envious. I keep trying to get DS to take the dummy with no luck (apart from first day, weirdly). Would give anything to help him settle in the cot. Don't feel bad about it.

I know, dummy use seems to be controversial, but so far so good with us - except this evening.  Tonight he was super fussy and the dummy was completely refused.   He was so OT, couldn't even get him getting off to sleep by apoping a feed to sleep.  DH eventually got him of to sleep with shhh pat.  Clever DH :)

Poor little fella. I hate those evenings. Sounds like you picked a keeper in DH. Mine has many strengths but dealing with the crying is not one of them!

Yes, DH is a BW/EASY convert after seeing the success with DS1, and really supportive - I'm a lucky lady :)

Quick update,  ds2 is now almost 4 weeks old and he's doing great.   Today mikey has fallen asleep swaddled in his cot easily and without props for all his naps!  Not sure if it's a one off and he's particularly sleepy for another reason (growth spurt?) But am hoping that he's showing signs of learning to fall asleep himself. Until today it's only been his first morning nap that has happened so easily.

Either way it's been a very peaceful manageable day :)

That's great!

Well done you and well done Mikey.  Usually growth spurts mean more waking up not less, so I think it's all down to your work! :)
