I am just starting to make food for my lo.  Is a food mill too much work for a lo at this stage?  Is a blender/grinder easier -- maybe in terms of getting the right consistency?

A blender would be fine to use it should give you the right consistancy.

For los aged 9-12 mths they should be getting into the finger foods. My ped told us to start giving dd what we eat (without the salt and sugar). Are you starting solids for the first time? If so, I would use a blender as at this age the mush stage will be short. If you lo has already been eating solids (from jars) and you want to start making, I would make foods with texture instead of totally pureed and smooth food.
