play room advice
« on: January 11, 2009, 23:37:29 pm »
In this new house we are going to have a whole dedicated playroom. Does anyone else have one? How is it set up? When do you clean it, do you just allow them to do their own thing in there and make whatever mess? Do you have a dedicated craft area in it? X thanks

You are so lucky!! It is my dream to have a playroom.

if i had one, i would keep most of the toys in there, a few in their room, just enough so it doesnt look messy all the time.  I would let them make what ever mess, with in reason and cleant it all up when they went to bed...mine dont nap.  i leave out their favorite, (at the time) toys and keep the others in bins like stacy did and change them out every once in a while.  I would get a small table and chairs for crafts and coloring and stuff, and have a cabinet to put all that stuff in.

I would love for my house to be toy free and have one area for them to make a huge mess and have fun.

hi- we've got one too.
I put Nick's toys in some stacked hatboxes with labels:
musical instruments
vehicles and people
legos and blocks etc...
I do rotate toys out so he doesn't get bored and not TOO much is out at once.
He parks his ride-on car in a corner.
We have several soft plastic balls on the floor.
I've got a diaper changing/nap mat area in the corner.
Bucket of books.
And a small table/2 chairs for crafts.
Plus a gated door in case I need to use the WC uninterrupted-LOL.
We pick up at lunch and then before bed. Usually I don't let him keep too many things out at once as he's spirited and easily gets wound up...
Enjoy your new space, Emma!!

oooh lucky you.  i would love one!!!

i saw a good idea on oprah LOL. get some carpet squares - 2 diff colours - and double side tape on the wall - maybe 3 across, 3 down, and use it to stick the craft on.  do contrasting colours iwth the house so it looks even more spec!

just an idea! we want photo's once it's done.

oh, and  reading corner would be good too (maybe a little space for you too with a coffee ;).)

Haven't really got any advice as I don't have a playroom but just wanted to add that I'm very jealous! I would love a playroom. But also, I love Aleesa's idea of a reading corner. I don't think ds would ever be able to get me out of there  :P.

We have a play room. I suppose some people would call it a family room but we also have a sitting room dining room in one so its a play room for us. I have an old sofa which I had recovered in bright orange. Small tv with dvd player and of course all the cds and dvds. Book shelf with 3 shelfs, not enough and will look into adding a larger wider one to hold more games and jigsaws or stuff that cant be thrown in the toy boxes. Its just a normal plain brown book case that can be used anywhere and the kids can reach their shelf. Have a small plastic table and 2 chairs and a big rug. Toys get thrown into plastic boxes and they are a mess but they all get pulled out on a daily basis and everything is tidied away at night. There are some photos on the wall with blu tack and a world map. When we move next month I intend to add a few more bits and pieces in, saw some gorgeous stools and bean bags, will add back the easel which ds was not allowed at til  now. This room is also my room so I can watch tv at night or dvds on my old comfy couch if dh is watching something in the sitting room. Also have my pc in the play room which means the kids can play and I can play.

Hey Emm...we have a playroom for Sophia (and thank goodnes for that given her growing collection of toys...and BIG ones too). Just like Stacy it is located downstairs in the basement where we do most of our living anyway. Her play area is actually adjacent to the family room..pretty much one BIG space kwim? So we have the big TV, Wii video games etc (entertainment center) against the big wall at the end of the room, a bathroom is right next to it. The family area is conventional...pciture frames, books, coffee table and couch.
A sectional divides the space between the 2 areas.
In Dd's play area, I got 2 sets of 12 toy bin organizers from Toys R Us. All her big toys are in there...her kitchen, table and chairs set, her 4 foot dollhouse, her big rocking horse (Reginald), floor pillows, and for now her battery operated suv (which we will move into the garage in the spring)....so there is decent room in there. I always aim to vacuum in there everyday but usually manage every 2-3 days. Stacy however has a point...I am getting ready to ditch these bin organizers which don't hold a whole hell of a lot and the bright colors aren't working for me anymore....should have used a bookshelf with plastic bins like she did. It's okay...will hopefully make decent $$$ at our yard sale. The carpet is dark green and the cats live there so it's important to me to keep it tidy and clean. I don't stress anymore about keeping it pristine, and quite frankly it still manges to look quite decent in there. I let DD make a mess and get creative down in her area, after all it is HER space to play. I make a habit of picking up with her afterwards if we can, if not I just do it later on whenever I have the time...sometimes I let the contents of her dollhouse lay around for days....no big deal. I don't usually do crafts...but we have a study where the computer is and though not fixed just yet...I plan to put up a good sized L shaped table for the puter and simple scrapbooking or even some of my artwork one day. :)
