Advice needed for 5 week old on 3hr EASY
« on: August 20, 2013, 21:34:29 pm »
Hello,

I have loosely started easy 1 week ago on my 5 week old.
(After 4 weeks if falling asleep in arms or on Breast)
I am very happy with how things are going but I have some questions re: my technique.

So far I was using Tracy "sample 4 week old 3hr as a template"
Up until yesterday I had been allowing baby to wake/sleep up to half an hour either side.
I started to wake baby in the exact time...but I don't feel this is right for such a small baby, also baby was very sleepy and crying when woken.

I think I will revert to a looser plan I.e allowing baby to wake got feeds.

I would appreciate any help or suggestion in this.

What age would be appropriate to start being stricter times etc.
My fear is that by allowing baby to sleep for longer will affect night sleep which is currently going very well.
The settling in own crib is still taking time with pat shush so this is eating into sleep time

Sample
E 7
A 7.45
S starts at 08.00 (but may not settle until 8.30)

E 10
A 10.45
S start to settle at 11.15-11.30 approx...but still working on pat/shush

E 13.00
A 13.45
S as above approx 13.15

E 16.00
A "limited" 16.40
S some days will settle easy/ other days not so much

E 18.00-18.30
A Bath 19.00
E 19.30 expressed milk in bottle 4oz
S. 20.00  Settles immediately after bottle!

Don't do dream feed ( I go to sleep at 21.00 ...wrecked from day)
May introduce it soon

Baby wakes at 2 or 3 am breast feed +/- nappy (feel I have to change as baby is do small and I am afraid of nappy rash etc) sometimes baby settles straight away other times have to pat/shush)

I feel very lucky that baby is so good during the night at such a young age.
But,  my main concern is:

Do I allow these times be loose ie wait for baby to wake for day feeds... Or wake baby at the 3 hr interval.

Any suggestions much appreciated

Hi!

TBH, I wouldn't and never did wake a sleeping baby at this age unless he was napping more than 2.5h (and 2h when he was older). I personally believe that a hungry baby will always wake up and doesn't need to be woken.
So to answer your question, yes, you can do a loose EASY. And anyway EASY is not a schedule, it's a routine and it's all about listening and looking at your baby and do what is right for him.
Does that help?

Yes!  :D
Thank you so much!
It helps to clarify things for me. As you said its not a schedule, I have to remind myself of that.
And thank you for explaining what to do re: length of time for sleep.
