my 10 month old refuses finger food
« on: May 25, 2010, 02:52:15 am »
hi there

my 10 month old is a good eater i would have to say, but i am trying to introduce finger foods for her such as bits of pear, pumpkin, banana, brocolli, potato, but all is that she does is smear it across the high chair as if she is playing with it, but when i pick a bit up and put it in her mouth she will take some or a bite from it. But she much prefers me to feed her a meal with the spoon.

Just on average how much should she be consuming? some days it varies, she would have say 110g food, and then after some fruit with yoghurt that would be for say lunch and dinner the sme but something different.

Breakfast she is ok she would have half a wheetbix with yoghurt and fruit and milk with it and thats about a jar full maybe a bit more.

I make all my own foods and try to get her to try new things but cant get her to eat finger food, its a battle, even when im feeding her her food with the spoon she mucks about soi have to give her a toy to keep her busy and she then is distracted and opens her mouth.

thanks kirsten

All babies are so totally different! I would just keep offering the ffs while still feeding her with the spoon. My ds is now 9 months and he eats very little ffs though I offer at each meal, he still really prefers to be fed smooth puree with a spoon. Just yesterday I added non-pureed corn into his puree and he kept gagging on the small bits of corn. He'd rather play with the ffs than eat them. My dd, at this age, was eating all sorts of ffs and eating them quite well, so just goes to show you no 2 babies are the same.

Eventually, they will all "get it" so just continue to make it fun and keep offering it.
