Hey there

DS is 8 months - he's been slow to start on solids, some days he's into it other days he's not. We have started on puree and are slowly moving towards BLW. He loves a broccoli/sweet potato combo but I can see the broccoli bits in his poo, they are black in colour. Does that mean he is having trouble digesting the broc? Should I stop giving it?

thanks in advance

I haven't noticed brocolli but I used to notice raisins and still at times notice corn in DD's poos.  I think some foods are just harder to digest and move through before totally digested but I imagine they will have gotten the good from them.  Unless you are noticing any other issues I would just keep offering xx

I think it's got a lot to do with not having many teeth yet too. We see all sorts from DD - always know when she's had carrotts, sweetcorn, grapes, peas etc and DS was the same. Since he got his big molars it's way less noticable (not that I'm watching him so closely these days ;)). I think its mostly that they can swallow good size chunks which are bit too big to be digested fully before they reach the other end, with molars they can break it down better!

Who knew pre- kids we'd be having conversations like this ;D

When my ds eats steamed broccoli as a ff he gets the broccoli bits in his poo. From now until after a year, you will see all sorts of rainbow poos! All different colours depending on what they are eating, all textures too, you'll identify foods and see what he ate the day before, etc., yep, diaper changing will be lots of fun!

I was thinking the same thing as Amelia.  When I saw the title of the thread, all that showed up on the subject line was "I see broccoli bits...." but I knew exactly what you were talking about.

As other PP's have mentioned, at this age, what you see go in is often the same as what you see come out.  Icky, but true.  Also keep in kind that broccoli is a very fibrous food that tends not to be well broken down in the gut, and may passed through relatively unscathed, iykwim.  You might notice the same about your poo, though hopefully, you will not post about that :)
