Title: I too have whole milk questions
Post by: CharlotteandCharlie on September 25, 2006, 02:58:54 am
I tried dd on 3% at 10 months old with disastrous consequences.  Terrible poops all day long and diaper rash that took well over a month and prescription meds to clear up.  I have since tried only lately (she is almost 14 months).

She hates it.

I tried goats milk (what I grew up on due to lactose issues)

I tried soy milk (didn't like it and gave her the runs)

I tried mixing 3% with formula 1 to 3 ratio.  She hates it.

So from the six or so sips I got her to take over the last two days mostly by tricking her that it was formula she now has mild diarrhea.

Do I have any alternatives?

Right now she is on Good Start - Follow Up 6 -18 months.  She LOVES her formula.  DH wishes we didn't have to pay 27.00 every week for it though.

Any advice, tips or tricks?

My dd has milk protein allergy and my ped said if she isn't over it we will have to give her soy formula until she's 2 yrs old as soy or rice milk is not high enough in fat (sort of like giving whole milk instead of skim or 2% under 2 yrs). If she reacts to the soy we'll have to try alternative formulas. She's currently bf but this is for once we cut back in bfing (I'll have to go back to work when she's 12 mths).

Will your dd tolerate cheese or yogurt? I'm lactose intollerant (can't have any milk, cream, or ice cream) but can have these (when I'm not bfing due to dd's allergy).

Rice milk is an option, but then you'd need to find other sources of fat, like avocado, olive oil, flax oil, etc.

We give lactose free whole milk.  She can tolerate yogurt and cheese though.  And ate 2 bites of DH's ice cream without problems last week.   :D

First Time Mom - Yes she can tolerate other foods with milk ingredince in them but not the whole milk.  I haven't tried 2% but then she wouldn't get the fat either.

Marisa's Mama - I will try rice milk this week and see if she will go for it.  I don't have a problem trying for fat in other foods.  She like avacado and bannana mixed.

Mouse Mom - I cannot find whole lactose free milk.  Maybe I will try talking to my grocery manager and see if he/she can get me some to test.

Did any of your kids fight the taste of (anything other than forumla)?  If so what did you do to get them used to it?

Thanks all.

We did the rice milk for awhile because dd was Milk Soy Protien Intollerant.  I was also still bfing because I wanted her to get the extra fat (and she did love avocado's so that wasn't really an issue), so I would suggest continuing some formula for awhile as well.

And then, when she was basically over that around 14/15 months, we still mixed rice milk with the whole milk about 50/50--dd didn't like whole milk as much at first (rice milk tastes sweeter) and even though she wasn't showing the symptoms of the MSPI anymore, she did get nasty poops when we switched over.  The dr. said that even when it isn't hurting them, many toddlers still can't digest everything in the milk and so their poops get runny and smelly--which does increase your chances of a rash, I guess.  More than anything, I just didn't want to deal with the nasty diapers and I have a hard time beleiving that it isn't better for her if she had more solid poops.  She was around 2 when we finally went completely with cow's milk and is totally fine with it now.

Good luck finding a combo that works--I know it can be hard to find what they will tolerate, both taste wise and physically

I wouldn't think it is a lactose issue if she's been on Good Start (which has lactose) for this long, but more likely that her body is having a hard time digesting the milk proteins (which are partially broken down in Good Start). Some kids actually digest 2% milk better than whole milk so that is an option to try as well.
