5 month old still in full swaddle!
« on: February 08, 2006, 17:02:59 pm »
My son is now 5 months old and has started rolling all over the place but he still needs to be swaddled to fall asleep.  I have to swaddle him with two blankets because he is so big and strong, but I have tried putting him down with an arm out, etc. to start to break the need but he won't settle for sleep until he is swaddled.
this is starting to concern me only becuase he is very fond of his new ability to roll all over the place and a few times has rolled over with him arms still swaddled and I think it might not be the safest thing.  I haven't found any other moms who's baby needed to be swaddled at this age so I need some advice please!  Thanks!

One of my friends swaddled her son until 8 months b/c he needed it, too.  Not sure about the no arm out thing.  I'd think that would be the safest way, but am not sure how to help you get there.  Hopefully, someone else can help with that one.  Just wanted to let you know you are not the only one.   :)

I swaddled Tyler until he was 8 mo old, and I weaned him from it then because he seemed ready AND I was tired of being the only person who could put him down for a nap (nobody else could do the Aussie swaddle). Even then, I weaned him down to having his legs wrapped in a blanket, and that's how he naps to this day (he's 2). Of course, he doesn't stay wrapped up once I put him in the crib, but the act of swaddling is a big sleep cue for him. Have you tried the Aussie swaddle? Instructions are at the top of this forum. It's most effective if you use a huge, thin piece of fabric like a bedsheet cut in half. His arms will be swaddled up near his face, and that makes it darn near impossible for him to roll over. And I know there are lots of other moms whose LOs were still swaddled at 5 mo, so hopefully you'll hear from them too!

We dropped the swaddle about a month ago with my 3.5MO DD when she was working her arms free and pulling the blankets up towards her face.  (I was unable to master the Aussie Swaddle  ::))  We transitioned to a sleepsack/grobag and put mits on to protect her face.  That replaced the swaddle in the winddown and seemed to satisfy her winddown routine.  Then we dropped the mits and now she's fully unswaddled and happier, I think.  At first, I tried zipping them up with her arms inside, but she got them free in just a couple of seconds.  Maybe it helped cuz it was very similar to the swaddle, I just don't know, but quit doing that after just a few days.  Seemed pointless.  The transition really wasn't that bad for us.

I still swaddled my DD and she is 71/2 months.  She has no intention of rolling over, I try to get her to roll, I roll her onto her side, then she rolls onto her back straight away, and grins at me like she is saying "I'm quite happy on my back mummy".  I will keep on swaddling her until she eventually rolls and then do the aussie swaddle, or try to. Then I will wean her from swaddle.

hi,
jake was a roller at that time too! I weaned him from the swadlle 'cos of that, and starting nursery.I found it quite hard (if you want me to go into it I will, but it's a bit lengthy....)
The point I wanted to make was, Jake has now become an "all over the place" sleeper, sometimes he rolls completely over and sleeps on his front (scared me at first!) sometimes he's on his side, sometimes on his back.He has slept much better since he has been able to choose his own position.
He used to see the swaddle as his sleep cue, but not actually enjoy being in it, if you see what I mean! but now the Gro bag is his cue, he seems to listen for the zip being done!

Sam was swaddled till he was 5 and the half months old when he started breaking free from his double swaddle. We started with naps and left one arm unswaddled then the other and eventually transitioned him into a Grobag. HTH. PM me if you want the instructions for the double swaddle. I could never master the Aussie swaddle.

Hi, We still swaddle our LO and she will be 9months on Saturday! She cannot sleep with her hands out or even up near her face. She sleeps on her side in between towels to stop her rolling on her front.

I have been battling in my head for ages about whether to wean from the swaddle or not, however she sleeps better in it, and so do we!!!!

She has stopped pulling her hands out lately so we are beginning to hope she is finally 'learning' control of her hands!!!???

Anyway for now we've decided to just carry on until something changes to tell us otherwise! (Probably the fact she moves out of home at 18, LOL.....)

Such good advice!  Thank you to all of the wise mommies who have responded so far.  Tried patting him to sleep on his tummy, arms free, for todays nap to get him used to falling asleep in that position since he is such a rolly polly now and he needs to be able to put himself back to sleep however he is.  He slept for 1.5 hours...eventually on his side.  Hope it is really that easy...yeah right!

While my lo is only 5 weeks old, I won't be surprised if I find myself in your shoes in a few months.  Have you checked out the link for the Aussie swaddle on the first page on this forum?  I recall reading somewhere on this site of someone who swaddled her 2-yr old even. If that's what your lo needs, then go with it.  I think the aussie swaddle link describes how to swaddle with one arm out, which is also the way to eventually break the swaddling habit - one arm at a time.  You can put your lo down on the side that has the arm out to minimize movement. Hope this helps. Good luck.

OK, so now my little guy pretty much won't be swaddled ( I still pretend as a cue) and he immediately rolls over to his side or tummy when placed in his crib.  He is still figuring it out but I think he is liking his new freedom.  I thought he would have a harder time than this, but we aren't quite there yet. And the added bonus...now that he is on his side/tummy I think he is finding his thumb a little better and isn't quite as passie dependent!
