My DD has just turned one, she has been great with finger foods for months now but recently she is tending to not do so well gradually more and more.  She doesn't seem to let herself swallow once she has chewed stuff up and just tends to spit out all the chewed up food and then takes another bite and does the same all over again. :-\

I don't know what I can do to stop this, I've tried to eat by her and show her (rather animatedly!) how I chew up food in my mouth and swallow but she still does the same spitting out thing.

Could it be a teething problem? I think there are teeth easing their way out at the back of her mouth. I'm starting to get a little concerned because shes not that keen on 'mushed up' food these days either and so isn't eating a great deal of food like she used to, sometimes nothing at all at meal times! She's really keen on tasting all kinds of food and chewing it up, its just the swallowing thats the problem! ::)

Be really grateful if anyone has any ideas to overcome this and if anyone else had this problem, and I'd love to know the reason for it  ???

many thanks

I'd guess that she does it because she can! It sounds like a new thing she's figured out how to do, and even better that it gets your attention. I'd end the meal when she does it, even if she hasn't eaten anything. Don't make a big deal out of it, just matter of factly say something like "It looks like you're not hungry now, we'll try again later" and take her out of the high chair. A lot of times when you stop making an issue out of weird food behaviors, they stop on their own. Of course, it could be teething too, but I'd still end the meal as she isn't eating anything anyway.

One thing to keep in mind, there's a huge decrease in appetite that happens around 1 yr, so she's going to start eating way less than she used to. It's normal for toddlers to go for days without eating barely a thing. If she starts dropping weight or waking at night from obvious hunger, then check back in and we'll see if something else might be going on. Don't worry...healthy babies don't starve themselves!

we went through this with Ryan too ! he looked like a hamster as he would store the food in his cheeks , then he would gag as he had too much in there and spit it out . it was a passing phase and i agree to not make a big deal out of it .
Ryan can still have phases where he does this and it can be a little embarrasing when you are out , but the more i tell him not to do it , it becomes a game so i just leave him to it , no attention and he soon stops doing it .
with teething Ryan didn't want to even chew the food so for us it was nothing to do with teething.
my bet is that she will chew and swallow sweet stuff and treats  , Ryan wouldn't spit out the treats he liked  ;)

Thats so true! Come to think of it biscuits and chocolate disappear without a crumb of mess!  :-\   Right -  I will do like you say and just ignore it and finish the meal there when she does this again. Thanks for your advice ladies, I'll keep you posted.  :-*
