Hi Everyone,

Traci - Good luck with with pu/pd let us know how you go. You are right in saying Judy is such an inspiration !!

Naomi - I have had some success lately with naps after using the weissbluth information Andrea and Traci posted for me (except the CIO part of course) More to do with the timing of the naps and no napping in between. Perhaps that might help your LO also -HTH

Hannah - good luck with the SIL thing fill us in on how it went

Mel - Welcome to you and Holly. A few pages back I posted how to make your own toast rusks which are really good. I wouldn't worry about the meat too much. I havn't even tried it yet and my LO (Halle) is 8mths. You could re-introduce it later. I am with Kate on the 'cryin Ryan' thing  I let Halle cry to settle for naps but it is only the 'mantra cry' If it was a real cry I would go straight in - but you get to know the difference.

Erin - Those pictures of Katie are so cute  :)  :)

Well, I had a great afternoon yesterday - DH stayed home and I went out LOL - I went to see John Fogerty in an outdoor concert at one of the Vineyards near my place. It was called "A Day on the Green"  I thought I only had 3 drinks but my cousin kept topping up my drink so not sure how much I had.  Lucky Halle will take formula from DH with no probs so I've been doing the old pump and dump this morning. I think it should be OK to do the 3pm feed though.

Thanks for the tips.

I am definitely having trouble reading the cries.  I do let her have a few cries but not for too long as am really conscious of it.  Also, because she was such a cruiser for the first 5 months and hardly cried at all I have a hard time with it. :(   So I think this is where my accidental parenting comes in because now if I leave her to cry a little bit she quickly winds it up to the OMG! level knowing that I will respond.  In fact, if I dare to leave the room before she is asleep she cries - ratbag!

Gosh I think back fondly to when she would settle herself and garble herself to sleep.  Where did that angel go??? :P Never mind, she will return I am sure......the power of positive thinking.

Bec - we lived in Perth from 2000 to 03 and I have some very fond memories of the Margaret River wineries.  Good food, good wine, great times! :D   So I am very jealous, I bet you had a great time.

I am only BF once a day now, usually mornings where we snuggle in bed and feed. So I am looking forward to starting on a few wines.  Mmmm with summer coming.......nice lazy afternoons with some friends, a good bottle of wine, cheese etc etc.  And of course a daughter who entertains herself while Mum enjoys her wine and cheese - what are the chances?

Hi again Mel and welcome to our forum!  :D   I think a lot of us experienced changes around the 5-6mth mark, developmental stuff mostly, teething, rolling, crawling can all cause problems.  I would say since you've had a cruisey baby for so long that it's definitely developmental and just ride it out, respond to her like you are and it will smooth out again (it will be forever changed, but you'll both adapt to the new way).

So what else is everyone doing for finger food?  Danielle's taken to eating things from what we're having (already tested as purees) - brocolli flowerettes (that one surprised me), roasted potatoes and pumpkin.  Last night she had oven fries and gummed them up well considering she doesn't have any teeth yet.  We haven't done toast since it's not a commodity that lives in this house anymore (until I start doing some baking).   Nathan used to freak me out and was still gagging on chunky stuff at this stage, D's just taken to it so easily.

Oh and an update on Nathan, I can finally start to see some changes after being on the new diet for 2wks!  Yay. :D

Night all.

Hello to Mel, welcome.  I second what Nikki said. We went through some really rocky times about a month or so ago...right around the time I found this thread...thank goodness!!!  Things have smoothed out, but of course dd reminds me daily that there is no such thing as perfect :)  I have to say I love the idea of the babes taking care of themselves while the adults have a nice glass of wine :)

Nikki- we did broccoli flowers the otehr day too...couldn't believe it but yes she ate them.  Must feel funny in their mouth.  We have been doing toast made from bread from the bread maker...no gluten!!!  Do you have a bread maker? You could easily bring toast back into your lives :)
We have also done a few cubes of cheese which she loves I have been sort of half feeding her and half letting her pick up the scrablem eggs.  If you put them in the fridge for a while after cooking, they firm up nicely.

Thanks for all the sil support.  Saw her today, actually wasn't so bad.  It was kind of funny though to see her sort of "snub" Sophie.. I just handed S over right away and how can you snub a cute babe in your arms?!  I went over the top invoting her to come over/go out for lunch/ call anything...so we'll see.  I told dh tonight that I think SIL is a hrad nut to crack and he said I don't think she's worth cracking...she IS cracked :)  So at least I have his support on the matter.

Naomi...are you looking for pics of the mom's?  Or just looking for the missing mom's...wasn't sure.

Erin- loved those pictures of Kate.

LOL at cryin' Ryan...Sophie does that too sometimes.  I can usually tell when it's escallating to an "I need you" cry and go in.

Bec-good for you...I love the phrase pump and dump. especially when it's for such a good cause.

And Judy yay for you and your party..everybody's having so much fun! I guess tis the season...or starting to be at least.
OK, gotta go df. Can't wait to  chat tomorrow.

Judy HOOORRRAAAYYY!!! Pleased that you are finally getting some sleep! :D Thanks for info on PU/PD. I have never done it as did not really know what to do and the few times I have tried it, he just gets MAD!! I now know what to do if I need to.
Welcome Mel!
Traci, Sam's last feed is usually at 6 pm and last night, it was 5.45 pm. He woke at 4 am as he was wedged and took till 5 to settle again, he was sooo upset!  Poor sausage! Anyway, he slept till 7.45 am which would mean 14 hours from his last feed so I wouldn't worry about Cole esp if he is taking lots of solids.
Like Judy, I only do 4 milk feeds a day plus 3 solid meals. Good luck on PU/PD.
Nikki, well done Nathan! We tried hard boiled egg yesterday mixed in with his veges and Sam did not mind it at all. I agree, I do not know how you scramble without getting bits of white in it. Any advice anyone?
Good luck with SIL, Hannah.
Hayley, are you doing OK? My boobs hurt just thinking about you. Do take care.

Hi Everyone,

Haven't had a chance to read, just wanted to post an update.  Cole was down at 5:30pm last night!  He pretty much started his day at 4:30 yesterday so there was no way I could stretch him until 6.  I also tried a different tactic for naps and he had 3 short naps    I focussed on A time rather than clock time and I'm not so sure it worked for him.

Anyway, this is how it went.  He woke at 8:15 pm.  I did pupd, gave him some anbesol for his gums and he managed to settle back by 8:35 or so.  Woke at 10 and I fed him and he went right back to sleep.

Then the big event.  Woke at 1:50 am.  To start, I gave him anbesol and tylenol because I didn't want to think he was in pain.  Did pupd and he seemed to settle about oh, I'd say three times.  I would leave the room as all was quiet.  Gave him 2 min. to settle (he often cries to settle) and nope, not having it.  One time I stayed with him and counted to 500 , removed my hand and NOPE, still crying.  Long story short I finally left him and he went to sleep at 3:30.  YEP, 1 hour and 40 min. later but I did not cave in.  YAY for me and for Cole!  I was so wound up though and rethinking everything that I didn't get to sleep until 4:30 then he was up at 5:30 for the day.  I fed and tried to put him back down thinking he'd be tired having been up in the night but no go.

Thankfully DH took him at 6:15, fed him breakfast, did first nap and I slept until 8:30.  I know I complain about DH a lot, but he really is a wonderful guy.  First nap was 45 min., think he went down 15 min too early, but DH saw yawns and he was grizzling so he put him down.

Anyway, I didn't feed him at 2am.  I'm sure we'll have a couple rough nights but it will be worth it in the end.

gotta run, DH needs a break!

Hi girls!!

Welcome Mel!!  This thread can be a life saver!!

Traci: Good Job with not caving in!!!  It will get better!!  When we were determined to get Jack out of the habit of waking at night it took us 3 nights and then one more night a few days later.  There is at least a light at the end of the tunnel!!

Well, Poor Jackson!!!  He is sooooo constipated from the codiene!! :(   Last time he had a good poop was on tuesday.  He usually goes once or twice a day.  Yesterday he was straining and straining for about 10 mins.  I took him into his room to change him and NO POO!!   So I gave him a glycerine supp.  Well he started straining again while he was on the table....then he started crying really hard like he was in serious pain and he just couldn't get it out so.....(poor jack)....I had to "help"him IYKWIM!!!  He was in so much pain and crying so hard he puked!!  :(   My poor little peanut.  My DH was on the verge of tears too   :D

Hello everybody,

I'm back. My ILs have left for home and I've read the posts I've missed since Wednesday.

Hooray for Judy!! You have given me inspiration to get back on track. For the past 6 weeks, we have been really giving in to the night wakings and I am exhausted so... renewed determination was what I needed. (And a wake-up call... you are right... don't want a kid not sleeping through the night when I go back to work)

Micky
... glad Jackson got through his surgery well. I'm sending you get well vibes over here!

Welcome to Mel and Holly!

Okay... solid food. We have had two good days. However, it is due to offering solids before the BF or at least 2 or 3 hours after the BF. See the problem??? The times don't work. It was a fluke that it worked for the last 2 days because I have been nursing at odd times and accidental parenting all over the place that I have had success with solids  Of course, adding the solids gave me the grossest poo I have had to clean up in a while. Kate... I'm sure YKWIM.

Anyway, I am determined to get her back on track. We usually have really good mornings but our night sleep is HELL! I can't believe that she can survive on the type of sleep that she is getting. I have tracked her sleep for 2 months now and for the last 5 weeks, the wakings have been over the top. At least 3-6 times a night. I am grouchy and barking at DH. (Don't have time to post about a long DH vent right now but don't worry, I will!) So... tonight... by the book pick up/put down. (Thanks again, Judy... don't know if I would have decided to do it if I had not read about your success!)

Hope to join you ladies in a few hours in the chat room. I need a visit with my cyber friends and a good virtual martini!

TTFN!

Hi everyone, thank you for your kind thoughts about my weaning. On your advice yesterday I expressed a little and it definitely has helped. I haven't done a lot, just enough to make more comfy, and also massaged out the lumps a bit. I think/hope I"m going to be okay. Trying to take it easy, but when there's apple to be cooked, baby to change and carry, and everything else that goes on it's not easy.

Daniel is going so well with the bottle. He's taking the morning and bed feed with no problems. The 2 day feeds he fights before we get it in, then once it's in he's away guzzling. Infact he's going so very well on my friends advice I'm going to limit how much I give him. Only max 200mls at each feed. Because what's happening is he's filling up on formula and not taking enough solids. I think he's definitely getting more from the bottle than he was from me, so I'm really happy we made the change.

Yesterday was DH's grandparents 60th wedding anniversary, there was a big dinner about 1 hour's drive from here. We decided just to go for the afternoon and evening then drive home. Daniel was the perfect baby the whole time, ate well, even his solids, took the bottle, smiled when he should, was quiet when he should. And SLEPT in his buggy/pushchair from 6.30pm until we left at 11pm. Not a peep from him. Then had a normal night sleep once home.

We've managed to stop feeding Daniel during the night, but I think the teething powder is becoming a prop! So, tonight I will persist a little longer with PUPD. I think we've kind of been doing that without realising it, so I'll just keep at it a few more times before offering the powder to see if that helps. In saying that he's been a bit grumpy today until I gave him some powder then he became happier, so maybe, just maybe he does need it.

All going well I'll check in to chat at 3pm NZ time.

Oh, welcome Mel, great to have another kiwi on board.

You're an inspiration to us all Judy! Thank you. I'll hopefully post another photo or two of Daniel soon.

Bye for now, someone wants his BOTTLE!!!!! YAY!!!!!!

One more thing I wanted to share. The other day I decided to make Daniel a toy. I'm normally not the sort to do that, but I figured why not? So took an empty 1 litre milk bottle  (plastic with a handle) and put about 1/3 cup of macaroni dry pasta in it. Well, he loves it! He can hold the handle and shake it about. Even goes after it before the fancy nice bought ones. He was just in the jolly jumper and I gave it to him in that and that was even more fun. Shaking and jumping was great!

As they say, it's not always the most expensive presents/toys that are the best.
