Switching Sides
« on: June 04, 2006, 01:20:31 am »
I went to a lactation consultant when my daughter was 5 weeks old and was advised to do single side feeds to ensure that she was getting the hindmilk and because she was gassy.

I read all over the place about switching sides (ie: if your baby is popping on and off - like mine is now).

Just wondering if you guys offer both breasts or just do single side feeds.

Single side feeding has been working for me so far .. but maybe I don't know what I don't know.  She seems to be done when she's popped off for good (she sticks her tongue out at my nipple if I try to get her on again  :P)

LOL about sticking the tongue out  ;D

Tracy recommended single side feedings.  I did them with dd1 and currently with dd2, except for the last feed of the night... she needs a little more then, and supply is low at the end of the day.

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Hi there!

I think single side feeding is good for the same reasons that you were told by your LC.  I tried to do single side feeding for as long as I could but at the 6 month growth spurt I went to both sides.  Carter would drain both breasts in record time!! :)  We continued double side feeding until he was weaned at 12.5 months.

Sounds like your girlie is happy with one side for now!  :P

My midwife recommended feeding from one side, then offering the other 'for dessert'.  I feed off noth sides, but I don't move him over until he's drained the one (using compression).

I BF DD till 16 months and only ever did single-side feeding - although I guess this pretty much depends on how much milk you produce, I had an abundance!!
