Title: How long should a 9mos old be nursing?
Post by: AvasMom on January 12, 2006, 20:23:35 pm
My dd appears to be weaning herself and I was just curious what the signs would be aside from the fact that she is only nursing for about 2 mins on one breast. It's a little upsetting because I was hoping to bf for atleast a year. Any advice?

A few questions: Does she eat a lot of solid food? Do you offer milk before solids or after? Are there any indications she is dissatisfied at the breast? Is she refusing to feed? Does she get lots of wet nappies?
Is there a chance she is just getting distracted during the day and wants to get on with stuff or are all her feeds that short?
It's thought uncommon for a baby as young as yours to be self-weaning. I'm sure people who know more can fill you in but at that age my ds was feeding for not more than 5 minutes for most feeds in the day and feeding for longer only once or twice. When he was sleepy he fed for longer but during the day he was too keen to get on to the next thing! The La Leche league say that any baby under 12 months can have a nursing strike but is not recognised as self-weaning.
