toast for 8 month old? Silly question
« on: March 24, 2006, 07:57:27 am »
HI....i have read many times my son id old enough for toast but i really dont know how to give it to him.

He is a fussy eater and is one of the ones who wont eat lumpy foods!!!! Anything with lumps or bits he gags and throws up!However he does chew/suck on plain biscuits and banana as finger foods but thats all right now.So i am thinking maybe i should try him on toast to get something else into him.

My question is how do i give my baby toast for the first time? Do i toast it in the toaster or do i have to  bake it hard in the oven?
What size pieces should i give him?
Do i cut it into bite size pieces,or bigger pieces so he doesnt stuff it all in and choke???What can i put on it?

Sorry if these are dumb questions im just a little confused!!!!

Thanks Kirsty

I toast it lightly (so it is still a bit soft but with bite) and then butter it and cut it into soldiers about the size of the biscuits that DD eats as snacks.  just give it a go, you can always perfect the size and shape depending on how he gets on.  oh and remember the camera, DD grins like a cheshire cat when she has a piece of toast in each hand  ;D

I do the same, but I usually cut off the crusts so its even softer for them to chew or suck.  My 10yr old used to gag on the crusts.  Another good thing to give them is crumpets, they are great, my lo loves them and eats more of them than toast even.

Kirsty I gave DS a bit of my toast today topped with philladelpha cheese - he loved the cheese and sucked the bread.

I give DD small bits with cream cheese or vegemite and she sucks on it for a while before swallowing it.

Hi

My DS loves toast - I second everything the others have said but want to add don't worry too much about the size of the pieces you give him as it will all end up gummed to a pulp and regurgitated many times anyway!
