give a bottle- formula or b/milk?
« on: April 02, 2006, 08:08:50 am »
Hi,

Just a quick question. I want to start DS to take a bottle.
Do I give him formula or breast milk??
I'm b/feedig from one breast at the time, so do I express milk? From what side?  ??? Really confused. Don't know what to do...
I had lots of frozen milk, but last few times we tried to give him a bottle, he just skipped the feed and waited till I got back home to breastfeed him (spoiled, spoiled, spoiled !!!  :-\ ::)) And yep, we ended up throwing out lots of perfectly good b/milk  >:(

If this is the wrong forum, please feel free to move this.

Any advice is welcome!!
Thanks

This really is a personal choice.
It is ideal if your baby can only have breastmilk for the first 6 months for various health reasons but any breastmilk is a bonus. Remember also that breastmilk keeps for a remarkably long time in the fridge and a surprisingly long time at room temperature if he really didn't like it frozen.

I wouldn't assume he would be less 'fussy' about the taste of formula - it's different! I would keep going with breastmilk if you can.

I'd definatly try and give breastmilk if you can as you may find formula could upset your LO's tummy whilst his digestive system gets used to digesting a different food. I found it best to pump first thing in the morning with DS on one boob and the pump on the other I found it really help with my let down. When ever you pump try and keep it at roughly the same time each day just as if you were introducing an extra feed. It may take a few days for your body to get the message to produce the extra milk. If you are returning to work and your LO will be missing the same feed each day you could simply express that milk he is missing for the next day. HTH
