DD wants to pig out on banana
« on: May 19, 2006, 00:50:39 am »
Hello!

After the successful intro of cereal I decided to try avocado as the first solid and dd hated it (scrunched up her face after tasting it) so we've gone to banana next. The bfing clinic told me to start with these 2 due to higher fat and nutrient count (DD is small for age and gains weight slowly).

I have given her banana for 2 days now and she totally loves it, opens her mouth wide and practically inhails it. I am limiting the quantity as I am offering cereal in the morning (she takes 1.5 tablespoons dry mix) and I don't want to impact the quantity of breast milk she takes. Today she gobbled up her 1tbsp of banana and cried for more when she was done. I gave her another 1/2 tbsp and it was gone in an instant, she cried for more again but instead I offered her the breast which she didn't take.

Will a baby eat something purely for the taste of it if not actually hungry? Should I have offered more of the banana?

Same here with my DS.  He's small and an EXTREMELY fussy eater (just started taking solids now at almost 10 months!!!).  Anyway, it's like bananas are their own food group where he's concerned.  He LOVES them.  I've been doing mashed for him but yesterday I decided to experiment with banana as a finger food and he ate almost an entire banana (he wouldn't touch it with his fingers but that's another story  ::) )

I wouldn't worry too much, at least he's got an appetite!  Watch out for constipation though...bananas can be evil that way (in my experience anyway).

Good luck!
