Mixing oatmeal and fruit
« on: May 15, 2006, 14:55:40 pm »
Hi -
I was wondering what other mommies do.  We have introduced about 6 foods to dd and she loves them all! ;D  But I have stopped giving her the rice cereal - it just stopped her up too much.  We have switched to oatmeal, and that seems to be working great.  I haven't had time to pump any breast milk lately so I have actually been mixing pureed pears w/the oatmeal - which of course she loves! (and I think is good becuase it dulls the taste a bit too)
I just came from lo's 6 month checkup and read the feeding handout and it says to NOT mix cereal with fruit  ???  That completely threw me off guard.  Do any of you mix your cereal w/fruit?  Or do you just mix w/EBm/formula or water? and give fruit as a side.  I'm wondering why that wouldn't be a good idea.  I put a call into my ped, but also wanted to hear what others do.
TIA for any feedback!
Tari

Tari-
I have never heard that either.  I always mix fruit (and sometime veggies... like zucchini) with cereal.  DD doesn't like liquidy food at all

Why they usually say that is because mom's will just mix the two together without seeing if they have allergies to the fruit by testing it for a few days. I know once the fruits have been introduced and there is no reaction, then mixing of the two together is fine. If anything eating both an iron fortified cereal like oatmeal and a fruit (vit C) at the same time is great as the vit C increases the absorption of the iron from the oatmeal. I would say just test the fruit for a few days, if it is fine then you can mix it with the oatmeal, etc. Hope this helps! Sarah ;D

You name it, we add cereal to it.  Even yogurt.  Babe is not too into the overly runny stuff.

Wonderful, thanks ladies for your replies!
Oooh, yogurt and cereal, that sounds great (I used to do that for myself w/grape nuts ;) )  Zucchi huh?  How interesting!!  I will have to try that once we get there  ;D
Sarah - very helpful, that makes sense, and the extra absorption kick makes me feel good that we are doing it that way.  Plus I think it helps her overall digestion of it.
I feel better, and will continue introducing new foods separately and make sure there's no reaction before throwing in the cereal.

Much appreciated!!

Not mix fruit with cereal?? I've never heard that. We've been mixing for months and DS is just fine.  ;)  His favorite is mango and oatmeal cereal, or banana. He also LOVES the barley cereal. We don't use rice too much anymore either.

That's DS's breakfast as well. Fruit and oatmeal. That's also what you get in the jars here for breakfast for babies.

thank you....very reassuring to hear.
they must have been referring to baby's first meal or when just starting out.....because it sounded crazy to me.  scott's maw - we also have jars of fruit mixed with oatmeal here  - although we are trying (emphasis on the word trying! ;D) to make most of dd's food ourselves, i do buy some organic baby food and just picked up some jars of prunes and oatmeal...which is why i was so thrown for a loop!!!!
mango is our next fruit to try, and since I have been CRAVING it so much lately i think dd is going to love it too....sounds lovely for breakfast! ;)
once again BWs, thanks for putting me at ease! ;D
