Starting rice cereal - questions
« on: May 15, 2006, 17:42:48 pm »
HI my son Antoine is four months. Just out of curiosity, I made a small very watery rice cereal last week and fed it to him. He was eating like a champ and didn't want to stop. "More mommy more". Since then, I've been giving him some in the morning. He's taking more each day. Now the mix is 3 for 1, that's three water for one of cereal. He eats about one or two tablespoon worth of the mixture. Here is what we do. I bf one side (normally takes both), after our morning routine I fix up our breakfast and we eat together. I just wanted to know if this is the right way to go and when should I stop bf at all in the morning and just feed the cereal. I'm confused with the whole process and would like to know where I'm headed.

Thanks

Martine

Hello,

Your LO is still very young and should get majority of calories etc. from you breast milk. If it was me I would bf first and offer solids afterwards. After all my understanding of weaning at this stage, is to introduce new tastes - not to fill them up. Rice has a lot less calories than BM and will fill your baby up prematurely.
Just my opinion though - I would be interested to hear other views

Like Kat said, breastmilk should still be his main source of nutrition for several more months. He should still be nursing at least 4 times per day for the same amount of time as before you started solids so you can make sure his intake doesn't drop. Solids don't replace breastmilk until your DS is closer to 1 yr of age...they're just for practice and supplementation until then. Take a look at some of the sample routines in the EASY forum if you'd like to see how it all comes together in the next few months. Good luck!

Thanks gals,

I guess we're on the right track. I'll ensure to give him both side again in the morning before the solids. Since he is only four month, should I just stick with the rice cereal or try other things too? If not, when should I introduce new food to him?
