Don't lose hope - your LO is used to things being done a certain way but if you're consistent she'll get used to the new way
It may be worth trying the shush again - you have to do it very close to their ears and quite loudly (ie. to be heard above the screaming!) and the combination of this and the patting means your LO can't concentrate on the crying (eventually - unforunately it doesn't work instantly!). Maybe your singing is too stimulating? I'm guessing of course, these babies are all different!
