SKIM MILK
« on: September 09, 2006, 13:02:03 pm »
Ok....I know that skim milk is a NO NO.   We are just starting my 10 month old out on a bit of whole cows milk a day to try and transition her from 4 breastfeeds a day to milk from a sippy.

The other day we ran out of whole mik and all we had was my skim milk. I didn't want to give her no milk so I gave her a bit of my skim. She LOVED it way more than than the whole milk. She isn't too keen on the whole milk yet. I am guessing it is the consistancy of the whole milk that she may not like. Is it horrible to mix the whole milk w/ some skim until she takes to the whole milk better?

I know that she needs the extra fat and calories in the whole milk but right now she will hardly drink it anyway.

TIA!!!

Shelby

I'd check with your doctor about that.  Maybe it's ok to mix the two  but I'd definitely ask to make sure.

Whole cream milk has alot more fat it which is what kids need at this age and that is why it is recommended until at least 2yrs old. I definatly agree with the PP posts check with your doctor first before giving anymore. Let us know what they say i would be interested to know.

Shelby, you can see below there is a huge difference in the fat content per 100ml, between whole and semi-skimmed milk.  Cow milk is unique in that the absorption of calcium from it is superior to other sources of calcium, also full fat milk is best because of its concentrated source of calories.

Milk is available as whole milk, semi-skimmed milk or skimmed milk. The fat content of these varies:

          o
Whole milk contains 3.9g fat per 100ml,
          o
            Semi-skimmed milk provides 1.7g fat per 100ml
          o
Skimmed milk provides 0.2g fat per 100ml
          o
1% milk, a blend of skimmed and semi-skimmed milk has recently become available and contains 1g fat/100ml or less.

Have you tried rice milk?

Ds can't have cow's milk (intolerance), so he gets this instead. It's much more like skimmed milk in consistency, and slightly sweeter (it's really wierd - tastes like liquid rice pudding). Perhaps she may prefer it?
