Feeding Guidelines Birth -18 months - CHART
« on: June 05, 2006, 16:46:06 pm »
Hi there.

Just went to PED on 6-2-06 and they gave us this chart with updated AAP guidelines.  I know we are always looking for a chart...guide....solid food consultant....so I thought I would pass it along to share with you all for one more peice of information.   It is easy to read and follow.  It is a PDF ad has to be opened with ADOBE Acrobat reader - most computers have it.  If you need it in a word doc - just let me know!!!

We made changes based on this - we had started giving juice - and stopped - we  were also on the way to three meals a day - and will stop at 2 for now.   BIG learning curve here....sigh!

Oops!!  I've been doing finger stuff before spoon stuff.  So does daycare, but with several other lo's to imitate, she chows down there.    ::)  I'll trade and see what happens.   :)  Great chart!!

I think Nitrates can cause problems in babies.  When the commercial companies make the foods, they screen for some of the nitrates and reduce the issue of "blue baby syndrome". People who prepare at home and use sore bought root veggies run the risk of those veggis havingbeen grown in the ground with fertilizer containing nitrates.   They say one way t oavoid this (rare) issue is to use Organic produce.  Here is a link for that - I skimmed it - and I am pretty sure it addresses the concerns in better detail and depth.  http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/nitratearticle.htm

When we had our water tested at our house there was a special inset that identifies the issues around nitrates in well water - here is a link for the water/nitrate issue  http://www.wellowner.org/awaterquality/nitrates.shtml and this one http://www.ngwa.org/pdf/nitratesclipcopy.pdf

Glad the chart was helpful

Hi
I noticed in the 6-8month section for veggies the you shouldn't give corn. Does anyone know why. I have been giving my DS organic jarred corn which says from 6months+
It never seemd to bother him.

Hi
I noticed in the 6-8month section for veggies the you shouldn't give corn. Does anyone know why. I have been giving my DS organic jarred corn which says from 6months+

Here is an answer to a mothers question about her childs allergy to corn.  In a nutshell - corn tends to have higher chances of allergic reactions and there are corn products in a number of foods.  Here is the question and the answer.

QUESTION: I nursed my baby for most of the first year, but as I was trying to wean him, I discovered he was allergic to corn. Now that he is starting solid foods, I need to avoid anything that contains corn, or corn-derived ingredients. Can you tell me which foods I need to avoid?

ANSWER - You are lucky that your baby was only allergic to the corn and not the milk protein, as a corn-free diet won't nutritionally compromise your child like a milk allergy has the potential of doing. You do, however, have to be very careful about what you feed your baby, as there are many hidden sources of corn, or foods derived from corn. Diets without corn are difficult to plan because corn and corn products are used in many food products. You will need to become an critical label reader and learn to detect all those subtle ingredients that spell danger.

Here is a list of foods or ingredients to watch out for:

Baking powder (the starch in common baking powder is corn starch)
Caramel color (often made from corn syrup)
Confectioners sugar (often has corn starch added to it to prevent it from sticking)
Corn (fresh, canned, frozen, dried)
Cornmeal (as in corn bread, corn muffins, corn chips)
Corn oil (this may be fine as little or no corn protein, which is the allergic part of the corn, is contained in it)
Cornstarch
Corn syrup
Dextrin
Dextrose
Fructose
Hominy
Invert sugar or invert syrup
Lactic acid
Maize
Maltodextrins
Mannitol
Sorbitol
Starch, food starch, modified food starch. Any of these may be corn starch
Vanilla extract ( often made with corn syrup in them)
Vegetable anything ( such as vegetable broth, vegetable starch or vegetable gum, because you don't know if the vegetable in question is corn)

It is all confusing, I just bought stage 1 meats and then my PED said no - so I am waiting.....it would be great if there was uniformity - but then again, imagine what a boring world that would be - enjoy the information.

Hi
Thanks for the info. You seem pretty resourceful. I guess you should never trust labeling. Not even for baby food.

Hey there- if you want the chart sent to your email - drop me an email at staceyrowe@verizon.net

It is in Adobe - which most computers have and I can make it in word if you dont have Adobe.
