10 mth old not wanting milk!!!
« on: July 09, 2006, 06:11:58 am »
Hi...

My gal has just turned 10mth old today. She's been on solids since 5.5mth and now takes 3 meals a day. She eats like a trooper but she's become gradually less and less interested in milk. First she refused milk from the breast, now we have trouble making her drink from the bottle and even feeding her from a cup is an epic struggle. She prefers blowing bubbles into her milk or acting like a milk sprinkler system!!! She barely takes even 300ml of milk a day. I read everywhere that BB should still take most of their nutrients by way of millk till 1yr of age but my LO just doesn't want to drink. HELP! Don't think she's teething or anything like that. I'm still pumping but have had to freeze more and more since she's not downing enough. My freezer's bursting at the seams and I've fed some to my dogs already! Any advice? I've started to pump less... quite a relief, actually. Thanks all!

What's your routine look like (including amounts of solids/milk)? Have you tried cutting back on solids?

Call me totally nuts, but can you flavor ebm?  Like with a touch of vanilla?  Might entice her back.   :-\

Hi Tylersmom,

My routine is something like this:

6.00am milk (usually 50-100ml is all she'll take)
7.00am breakfast (3/4 cup of oats with fruit mixed with about 50ml EBM)
11.30am lunch (3/4 cup of brown rice, veggie and tofu/fish/meat)
1.00pm EBM (about 50-100ml)
4.00pm EBM (50ml) then snack (fruit or yoghurt or cheese)
6.00pm dinner (3/4 cup of pumpkin, veggie and meat)
8.00pm EBM (100ml)

Is this ok?

You might try cutting back on solids and see if that helps. Her appetite may be slowing down a bit as she approaches her first birthday, which is pretty common. You could also try adjusting her routine a bit if you'd like. For example, you could switch her 1:00 EBM and 11:30 lunch. You could also move her 4:00 EBM a little later and eliminate the snack afterward. It's really up to you...often cutting back on solids is the quickest and easiest fix. Let us know how it goes!

I was terribly worried when Alfred wouldn't drink water during the day, and was drinking hardly any milk at the morning and night feeds.  Then, he just went back to it and guzzles both.  I came to the conclusion that they know if they're hungry or thirsty, and there's no point in worrying.

So long as the food you're giving your child has enough of the nutrients needed (and I guess it does if she's not taking milk), then.... I say relax.
