I think ds has finally convinced me that he doesn't like eating purees. I let him grab the spoon, even though he makes a huge mess, but it doesn't make a difference. He's now decided he doesn't want the fruit purees, either.
What's odd is that he will eat cereal - he seems to like that - so I don't think it's the spoon that he's opposed to. The good thing is that, if you add up the calories of 1 entire serving, it runs up to about 100 calories - if he'd eat it all like he did yesterday. I did wonder afterwards if that filled him up for the next few hours so that he wouldn't eat more solids, he just accepted bm.
So the doctor had recommended that I boil food like carrots and broccoli heads and fruit that hasn't rippened, cut it into pieces that he can pick up on his own, and let him eat that. He seems more likely to eat that, though he won't pick them up on his own yet, but seriously, how many calories are in that?!
And he still won't drink even 4 oz of formula a day. Sippy cups only help to an extent (and they leak and cause a mess and I'm already frustrated just trying to get a few sips into this kid!).
My mother thinks that the only way to do it is practically force it down his throat. Bounce him, sing to him and have the tv on... do everything to distract him so that he may open his mouth even a tiny bit and she can shove the food in. I don't agree with her (and it drives her mad). What kind of life is that, doing that for a few hours every day (2-3 meals) just to get 20 calories into his body? She also thinks I should withhold bm so that he will be hungry. I agree with that... to a point. If he simply refuses to eat and it's almost his naptime, I need to get some calories in him, don't I? This kid is still waking up several times at night to eat so if he doesn't get the calories from bm, I don't need him waking up every single hour just to eat!
Grrrr!!  I need to get some food into this kid!!!
