hiccups!
« on: April 22, 2006, 22:34:07 pm »
My son always gets the hiccups within 30min of breastfeeding. this is very annoying b/c quite often they happen right when he is ready for a nap. I know the one way to get rid of them is to get him to swallow? Is there someway to prevent them?

If you come up with one, let me know!  Both my boys were avid hiccuppers both in utero and out.  Little guy has them right now!

No advice here either. My dd has had them a lot when she was very little, she outgrew them, though, by the age of 6 months or so.

My DD had/has hiccups constantly and it would always happen at the worst time.  Best thing that worked for us, Gripe Water and you can give it through the nipple of a bottle.  I waited at least a couple of minutes for her to get into them and then I would give her the gripe water...worked like a charm everytime....still does

My littleone used to hiccup all the time; in utro and the out. According to my ped. it is a symptom of a underdeveloped digestive system thus most babies outgrow it by 6 months; refluxes tend to suffer more then other babies as well. According to my ped. it does not bother the babies at all, it certainly never stopped mine from falling aspeel or anything else so I just left it otherwise she would have bee  drinking gripe water by the gallon.

Ryan hiccups a lot too! we would put him over our shoulder and rub his back . he can't fall asleep with hiccups , so nap/bed time is usually delayed untill we get rid , they seem to go on for longer if we lay him down. now he's older drinking gets rid quicker

my 9 week old also has them maybe 4 times a day and they can last 20 mins! I find that if they have someting to suck on (me, finger, dummy etc) they go a lot faster - my friend swore by a little boiled water in a bottle.. hope it helps!

Daniel was a big hiccuper in the womb and still is, though it is getting better.  He has mild reflux so I think it is to do with that.  When he was younger a quick breastfeed would sort him out (the swallowing I guess) but it doesn't work any more and you might want to avoid it if you think it would disturb your routine.  Sometimes gripe water does the trick and sometimes I try to get him to drink water from a cup.  It is a real pain as he can't settle for naps with them and they last 20 minutes or so.
