Thank you Chicane and Jiinx.. i'll find the book in the bookstore.. and surely will browse the website.. :)

another quick question ...for his very first food should i give him a pureed pear or pear juice... i've been in debate with my mom about this since forever... she insists in giving DS juice.. 3 times a day... since she's been doing so with me and all the children..

I'm not sure what is right but i have never given juice! :P  I just never thought about it.  Juice is not really solids, is it?  That's probably the reason why DS prefers water when he's thirsty.  Juice seems too sweet for him. He needs to reach for water after a few sips of juice.  I also wanted to introduce sugary things only after DS's 2nd birthday but daycare gives children cookies...  But most of my mom-friends always said to me "well done that your kid will drink water!"  :P

I wouldn't give juice, don't see the benefit in giving it? Liquids should be milk or water.

I'd definitely go with puree over juice.  Juice (heavily diluted) is a treat for my DS.

That is, if you mean Juice like you would get in a carton - I think the thing with these is that there is an awful lot of sugar in them (even if there's no added sugar there's the fructose from the fruit) so a lovely sweet thing for LOs to drink.  As pp have said maybe putting them off water.

I mean, think about the number of oranges you would have to hand squeeze to get a cup full - whereas perhaps a LO would eat half of one (of course when they're a bit older but I couldn't think of another example!)

In terms of taking care of your babies/infant's teeth ..I find juices can get very addictive and babies and infants would prefer it much more than water or milk, if given the chance. Cavities are much more likely with juices due to the sugar content and the fact babies suck on it for a longer period of time and, as a result, would cause the pH in the mouth to become acidic ...

I agree with all the PPs, juice is a sugar sweet drink and your lo may not want to have water or milk once exposed to juice. My dd only gets juice at birthday parties or if she's really sick (she's been "really sick" with ear infections twice in just over 4 years). Our ped dentist said to stay away from the juice as they see lots of los with cavities caused by juice.

Thanks ladies.. sorry for the late reply.. just got back from weekend with no internet connection *sigh*

about the juice thing ... so sorry I guess i made you all mistaken ... what i mean is not exactly a cartoon juice with added sugar and so on... it's the thickness for the pear (arrrgghh i don't know how to explain) .. we're confuse to give the pear in the form of puree.. or liquid ... there! guess that's better explanation...

yet like koe2moe said.. liquid is not solid .. :P

so i want to try it today though... a very watery pureed pear ...
i just sterilized all the equipment .. wish me luck... (very nervous bout this  :-X)

in a rush so a quick reply - you can mix the puree with cooled boiled water to get the right consistency - start with it quite watery no lumps...dont worry its not as hard as you might think...keep us updated

Funny Story...
after many debate with mom.. i finally made my first baby food with "home baby food maker from pigeon"
first i cut and peel the pear.. then steam it for approx 2 mins more.. then i grate the fruit, that automatically goes to strainer .. then i use pestle to mashed the pear through strainer .. and come out as a liquid pear...  ??? (what the..... )

guess my mom win this time..  ::)

should i blend it? or should i not used the strainer?

hmm i think i only strained out the stringy bits.  I didn't cook pears either.  I thought only hard fruit like apple needs to be cooked :P  So I didn't bother :P  Also for banana, I did try straining but realised it's only juice left and put the bits back in :P

I peel then steam the pear then whiz it in the food processor till smooth - put in some of the cooking water or cooled boiled water to get the consistency right. The pear will always have bits in it unless you have a moule (fine hand turned sieve) You can mix in a bit of baby rice to bulk it out if you want to. I started with rice, waited till he got the hang of it them moved to pear...this week we'll try sweet potato...personally I would wait a while for banana - some people say it can be hard to digest...like anything - give it a go and follow the cues of your LO

Hi koe2moe - i steam the pear to sterilize it actually.. i'm too paranoid maybe.. just read the book "miracle of enzym by hiromi shinya" makes me think that all food can be potion to human esp to baby  :-[  (the pesticide and the whole process)

Chicane - i'm going to buy food processor this weekend  :) .. thinking of start light with fruit .. then go to baby rice.. Do your LO have any problem with baby rice? you surely start with a very watery one.. and add the thickness in within 4 days (or not? since we have to stick with one food for every 4 days)

hi nollie - my lo didn't have any prob with the baby rice and yes i started with it quite watery - did that for almost a week (he's a little slow on the uptake!) then mixed in some pear...now do pear alone and thicker baby rice...and will try sweet potato today! As far as introducing new foods some books say every two days others more...follow your bubba, if the lo looks really into it then try something new...with mine i got the feeling he needed more time so i am leaving it about 5 days before trying something new...

We started with baby rice here too - and then pear and then sweet potato (that seems to be a pattern!!).

I did wonder if you meant about the consistency of the pear rather than actual juice when I read your post.

With reference to wanting to give 'bulky' foods, remember that at this stage LOs are really just on solids to get used to different textures and tastes rather than for any kind of nutritional value - LO will only have a couple of teaspoons to start with.  Could it be that your LO is going through a bit of a growth spurt at the moment?  You may want to think about increasing milk intake for a bit too if that's the case.

Hope he enjoys the pear!!
