when during day give milk
« on: March 22, 2007, 04:35:59 am »
sorry if this is a stupid question.

my LO doesn't use a bottle but a sippy with straw.

when during the day do you give your LO cow's milk?  i mean, before, after or during meals? or between breakfast/lunch/dinner?

is there a certain time they will drink more?  LO needs 12oz isn't it? so do you give just a little in a cup each time, wait and see what happens or does it become set after awhile?

thanks.

Dd gets milk with meals and her after-nap snack.  Our ped said 24oz at age 2.

In the US our PED suggests 3 servings of dairy a day.  She said he could have only 6 oz. of milk, 2 yogurts and cheese and that would plenty of dairy for the day.

I give my lo milk when he wakes up in the morning, then after nap and before bed.

Ds has milk with every meal, and with his bedtime snack.  Sometimes he drinks it, sometimes he doesn't.

Our Ped (Canada) suggests the milk range for a 12mth old is 16-32oz.  It's a huge range. My LO drinks his milk at each meal and I give him water between meals.

My question is similar.  My daughter just turned 1.  This was her eating schedule:

6:30 wake up and have bottle

7:30 bfast solids

11:15 bottle

12:00 lunch solids

4:30 bottle

6:00 dinner solids

7:15 bottle

The milk is before the solids on this schedule because, when formula was more important, I didn't want her to get to full on solids.  Now that solids are more the key, I think I should make changes (probably should have sooner, oh well).  I tried today to have her eat bfast first thing rather than milk and then give her some milk around 9:00.  Nope.  Refused to drink more than a sip of milk.  Yesterday I tried doing lunch first and then milk later.  Nope again.  Refused to drink more than a sip of milk.  What do you all's schedules look like?

pawre: you didn't mention how old your LO is?

DS just turned 1yo. Our schedule's a little quirky... but so is he!  ;)

(wake time is 6am, and he's usually not too hungry in the morning)

6:45 - sippy of milk (4-6oz) while we get breakfast together (and maybe a few cheerios on his tray)
7:00 - family breakfast
* if he doesn't eat much for breakfast, I offer a small snack & remaining milk before nap*

11:30 - lunch (usually includes some dairy - yogurt or milk)
* if doesn't eat much lunch, I offer a small snack before nap *

4-4:30 - 6oz milk (he seems to want milk right after his 2nd nap)

5:45-6:15 - dinner

7:00 - sippy of water (usually only a few sips)

We struggled with the bedtime bottle for quite a while. He'd usually only take 1-2oz, then wake between 9-11pm hungry... so we just moved the milk to late afternoon, when he seemed to want it. This is our schedule right now, but he's been teething for ages... so it may change, once all the teeth come through.
