We've had a little pattern going over the last two weeks. Dd will go three or four days without pooping, so I give her a couple bites of prunes, and the next day she poops four times and gets a diaper rash. Then she goes another few days with no poop and the rash clears up. Prunes, then poop, then rash. I can't figure out if the rash is from the prunes or just from the fact that she spends an entire day pooping (and often does it during nap so I don't know how long she sits in it until I change her). This time I lathered on the Desitin to try to be proactive but she still got a rash. Is there something I can feed her other than prunes to help her to be more regular, and maybe help me figure out if she's reacting to them? Thanks so much!

What I used to do was to give prunes little and often - every morning in his porridge. This would keep him from getting constipated in the first place. Also, make sure she's drinking enough water/juice - if her stools are hard and difficult to pass this could mean that she needs more liquids.
It may not be the prunes giving the rash - it could be anything in her diet, it's just that the prunes are making her go (a lot ;)). Try cutting things out, or maybe if she can go more regularly, she may avoid the big 'blow out' that could be to blame.

Pears are also good for Constipation.

Thanks ladies. From a preventative standpoint, how much water should I be giving her? She's nearly 7.5 months old and doing three meals of solids, during which I try to get her to take water breaks but it's always like, "Hey, that's not what I want - where are my carrots, woman!"

have u tried giving white grape juice diluted with water? dd loves it and works like a charm without giving any extra gas.
