milk
« on: November 06, 2007, 21:12:54 pm »
my ds is on 3.25 % milk.  I was wondering what is the real difference between 2% and the 3.25%?  We will be going to mexicofor 2 weeks in Jan and just incase they don't have homo, can he has 2 %?  Will it upset his tummy?  why is it that they need 3.25% until age 2?  help... confused

Hi,
I think the reason they need the 3% milk is for the fat. It helps in the development of the brain. I think that if you gave him 2% on a short term basis it will be fine. On occasion if I've run out of homo milk I'll give my dd 1%. i don't think he will have any tummy troubles, as the only different is the fat content. We went to Jamaica las Feb and they actually had 3% pasteurized milk. I would be more concerned to make sure it was pasteurized over the fat content.
Have a great trip!!!
Kim

Ditto to what Kim says and homo pasteurized is readily available all over Mexico.

Hi.
You can tell it is pasteurized as it says "ultrapasteurizada" (spanish).
And you can be sure of that. Usually all the 3.25 % are in a blue tetrapack. You can find this brands and all of them are the same if they are blue: "Alpura, Parmalat or Lala" The red ones are with a 2% and the green ones are with a 1%.  I hope this helps you. And good luck on your trip to my beautiful country. Where are you going?

No not dumb, it says on the bottle. You would rarely see unpasteurized milk in hotels, restaurants, branded grocery stores in most countries.  Mexico has Walmart etc..and their own national grocery chain that carries skim through to homo milk.  Where are you going to?

ETA:  Thanks for more info Dani, just saw your post and yes, a very beautiful country indeed, I could go there anyday anytime, we love it!

Well Hello... thanks for the country compliment. I love it too.
Just to add what aisling just said. At any hotel or grocery store (Walmart) or even in a breakfast buffet you can find the three types of milk. Just ask for whole milk.
Happy to help more if you need it.  ;)

Have a good trip.  Just to let you know, my doctor told me that here in Canada (where I am) they've increased the age that children should have homo milk until to 4 years old.

We're in Canada and our doc told us to switch to semi-skimmed (2%) at his 2 yr appt.  ???  We already did it at around 22 months.  Our DS is in the 90th percentile for height and weight though and if his brain develops anymore he may take over the world by the age of 5!  :D ;)

LOL Aisling.  I know my dr said they had just changed the recomendations lately, they constantly seem to be changing these things.

ya i guess as there are so many low fat foods parents are buying, it's not helping the situation.
i'm in canada as well and my ped told us 2 years but i guess by the time he gets near that age she will tell us differently.
