Fruit with sugar???
« on: July 28, 2006, 03:58:29 am »
Okay so my LO is finally on solids, but when I go to the store to look at fruit purees, Heinz, all I see are the dessert ones that have added ingredients such as sugar.  Since I am new to all this I am asking you guys if this is how the fruit is suppose to come?  Or am I not looking at the right name brand, because that is all I see from Heinz... THE exception being pears, apples, and apricots.  But the bannanas, strawberries, blueberries all have extra ingredients.

I never bothered with the jarred fruit - we had bananas right from the peel (I'd pick off tiny little bits or I'd put some in a bowl and mash it up and mix it with EBM or formula), or I'd cook and puree the apples or pears or blueberries myself in the blender/food processor. In this house we have issues with sugar (Josie acts like a wild child when she has some) so we avoid it like the plague.

In the meantime, there are lots and lots of veggies you can be using, and if the flavor is too strong - Josie gagged on straight squash - you can mix a bit in with cereal till they get more used to the taste. And the veggies don't come with sugar! :) (although once you get to the jars of "stew" puree, they do have some added ingredients)

It's definately worth making your own purees. You know there's no hidden nasties and you can make big amounts and freeze them which works out much cheaper than jars of food  ;)

We always used Gerber fruits, and never the desserts.  They don't need the extra sugar!!  I dont know why they even make those for babies! ::)

They make up to stage 3 fruits, and they have all kinds without sugar.

Hi there
I always get the organic president choice brand at superstore and has nothing but fruit and sometimes water. I also noticed that the non organic kind has no additives either. I suppose you have a superstore as I noticed you are in NB. Gerber found at walmart, also has no additives to them. HTH

Thanks all, I do want to make my own but I wanted to buy the packaged ones first to see if she even agrees with them.  I will look at the other brands and look into making my own too.  I think it's silly they they would have sugar this soon.  Thanks again!

Organix are also a sugar free range.
Am confused with people trying store bought first & then doing the cooking. I did it the other way round!

For me I figured it would be easier to buy 50 cent jar and see if she likes it over preparing and cooking for an hour hehe.
