milk questions
« on: November 26, 2006, 13:58:27 pm »
Now that DS is 1 year, should I be giving him breakfast BEFORE his morning bottle? Do I include yogurts as part of his daily milk allowance and if so how much? I ask because after having an 8oz bottle of milk in the morning, he now isn't having very much for breakfast am wondering if I should do it the other way around. He also has 4oz about 2pm (phasing this one out) and 8oz at bedtime.

He is waking quite regularly around 5am and I'm not sure if its hunger. I have tried to get him to have more in the day but am wondering if he is having too much milk its filling him up too much so he isn't having as much solids-kwim?

They say 16 ounces is recommended at this age. Stacy the sleep mod had interesting info that this just refers to the fluid milk as it is Vitamin D fortified and they need to have that much Vit D. I guess it depends on where you live. I don't think this is neccessary if you live in a super sunny climate, or if you lo gets vitamin d through other sources.Do you want to post your typical schedule and when you feed, how much etc and we can have a look?

wakes 7ish 8oz bottle
8am breakfast-weetabix and toast. Lately refusing weetabix and only eating about 1/2 slice of toast
10am snack eg yogurt or crackers and soft cheese
12pm jar of food and some dessert
2pm 4oz milk
3.30 snack eg sandwich and biscuit-this is his 'dinner' at daycare
5pm 1/2 jar of food and some dessert-I use this meal to top up his dinner at daycare because he doesn't always have very much
7pm 8oz bottle
bed 7.30

I would give him breakfast right when he wakes and offer the milk during the meal.  He is probably getting full from the milk.

I think Judy has given some good advice. And some babies just don't like to eat much upon waking. If your lo is like this, then you could offer half of the bottle and then the rest in a sippy with breakfast or as part of his meal, on cereal or whatever.

You could also try a small snack before bed, not so much as he will wake up the next morning still full from the night before. It may take a while until you start to see solids increase, and he is not drinking much more than the recommended amount anyway. It might be more of just playing around with the times that solids are offered.
