Tanking up after 8 weeks
« on: July 07, 2006, 00:22:42 am »
According to Travy's TBW Solves All Your Problems, she says on page 95, "Don't continue cluster feeding past 8 weeks". Does anyone know why this is? Did you stop after 8 weeks??

Yes, it is breastfeeding and feel free to move it - I wasn't sure if this was a feeding or a sleep question - thanks!

A lot of people on this board who find cluster feeding works for them don't stop it at 8 weeks. I have to confess I wasn't even aware that was Tracy's suggestion  :-[.
I would say continue if it's right for you and your LO and is helping to prevent night wakings.

I didn't stop either.  And when I did stop I always added it back in during growth spurts.  Every lo is different... go with what works for yours!

I also did cluster feeding (and loved it!) and definitely didn't stop at 8 weeks.  I remember reading that about quitting at 8 weeks when Carter was already 4 months!  I kept going with it until 6 months when we started solids and it was easier for me to phase out.  I had a big boy and he just seemed to need it.  Plus he was sleeping through the night (since 7 weeks of age) with it so I wasn't about to stop!! ;)

I stopped cluster feeding at around 9 weeks, but I didn't just stop.  If we had a day where she woke from her catnap pretty early, I'd cluster, but if it was later then i'd just wait awhile to feed her.  For example, if her catnap was over at 4:30, I'd feed her when she woke, then again before bed between 6 and 6:30.  But if her catnap was over at 5:30, I wouldn't feed her when she woke, I'd try to wait until 6:30.  We were dealing with 45 min naps at the time, so it was nice to have the option.  Her nightwakings were not affected by the cluster feed either way.  To me it just made getting through the evenings easier!  Now at 12 weeks we don't cluster at all- unless a growth spurt!
