can 8 month old baby drink bottled water?
« on: June 15, 2009, 14:39:42 pm »
I was just wondering if, or when, my 8 month old baby can drink bottled water? We will be on holiday in Turkey where the tap water is not safe to drink. The hotel we are staying at also does not provide kettles in the room to boil the water. So can my baby drink bottled water?

Thanks :)

I've always been under the assumption that it's not okay to make formula up with bottled water, nor is it best for a baby to drink bottled water as their main water. But, when you have to do it, you have to do it.  It's much safer than tap water from a questionable source.

I'm assuming that your baby is formula fed?  If he/she is breastfed then they should be getting all their water from you, so if you just want to give a few sips of bottled water I'm sure it's ok.

If it's for formula, can you bring your own kettle, one of those electric ones?  Or buy one?

I don't know about the bottled water, but I agree it would be better than the unsafe tap water.  I wonder if some bottled water is better than others, maybe there is a kind that is of better quality.

I don't know whereabouts you are but we have special bottled water called Nursery water that is used to make bottles with formula.  It has the fluoride in it that they need.  This is the link to give you some information... http://www.nurserywater.com/
Maybe you have something like that where you are??

thanks for all the replies so far,

just wanted to add that my baby is breastfed but has water with her meals and also as the weather will be very hot ( can reach up to 40 degrees ) I wanted to make sure I always had some water to give her.

If its just a few sips is bottled water ok to give?

I can't say if it's ok, but it sounds like a better option than the tap water.   :P

I make up DD's formula with bottled spring water I buy at the grocery store as we are on well water, have a water softener and our fridge has a carbon filter - all no no's for little ones.  I just buy the spring water with the lowest mineral content I can find - turns out it's store brand as opposed to Evian or some of those.  You can't use mineral water or carbonated water (i.e. Perrier), but low mineral spring water is fine.  I make up her oatmeal with the spring water and she also gets it to drink in her sippy.

carbonated water

Carbonated water can be produced in the home by charging a refillable seltzer bottle by filling it with water and then adding carbon dioxide. But for me, it is nice if the baby should drink a purified or mineral water. To protect the baby from any disease that cause by contaminated water, right?

treated bottled water (ie just plain safe drinking water) should be fine but you may want to avoid mineral water because they have quite high sodium (salt) content.
