Gearing up for cows milk...
« on: June 19, 2009, 13:23:20 pm »
Wesley is 11 months old so we'll be starting big boy milk soon. Here is my question though... As we get closer to dropping breast feedings do I just replace the nursing with a cup of milk?  When he wakes in the morning do I give him milk as I would have nursed him and then a little later do breakfast? What do you all do?

Thanks!

Hi there,
Avery is rapidly approaching her one year birthday, and here's what we've done.  At 11 months I started offering small amounts of cow's milk, sometimes warmed, sometimes not, in the sippy cut, just to give her the taste for it.  She has been drinking water out of the cup for about 4-5 months now, so she knew what to do.

Because I'm intending to wean her, I've actually been giving one whole milk feeding as cow's milk from the cup (but still BF morning, afternoon and right before bed) for the last week or two.  Then I will switch another feeding to the cup, and finally cut them all out (except maybe bedtime).

We always started the day with BFing, but as I'm gearing up to go back to work in a few months, and the BF is coming to an end, I'm going to consolidate breakfast and milk/cup together.  I read that babies 12 months+ only need 14-20 ounces of milk per day, so I figure it I offer cow's milk three times a day (5-6 ounces each time), then it doesn't have to be "separate" from meals.  In fact, I want to teach Avery that milk is her drink with breakfast, lunch, dinner and water is what she drinks throughout the day.
