13 month old refusing naps
« on: April 26, 2011, 07:09:33 am »
Hey ladies,

My son has never been a good sleeper but has recently started refusing his daytime naps all together or I have a horrendous fight getting him to sleep.

He gets up around 8am and goes to bed around 8pm. I try putting him down at 11am and 3pm but he just won't!

Any ideas? Very stressed out mummy here lol  :P

I expect 11am may be too early for him, that's only 3 hours awake time! I'd try giving him just 30 mins nap or so at 11.30 or 12, and then a 'proper' nap at 3. Remember if he's overtired he's going to resist sleep too.

Hi

He could well be starting to go through the 2:1 nap transition...link below might be helpful:

Most LO's at your DS's age do either a long AM/short PM nap or vice versa. I agree with Anna that 3hrs A time is on the low side so you have gotten into an UT/OT loop which can be very common during 2:1.

Does this help?

If he doesn't have 2 naps he won't have one at all so we just end up with him crashing due to OT at dinner time (5-6pm) and he uses that as naptime. Rather annoying!

So do you think doing 1 short/1 longer nap would work?

Maybe aim for AM nap at 11.30am (30 mins) & PM nap around 3pm (1.5hrs-ish) as Anna suggested?

I could try it yeah. One way or the other. Even if he just took 1 long nap I'd be happy lol

I would give it a try for a few days (it will take a bit of time to adjust to a new routine), if all else fails do an early BT to keep on top of OT.

Let us know how you get on!  :)

This little man is just sheer awkward lol. He's never ever been a good sleeper, has never slept through etc. Had to give up doing bedtime routine because he won't settle for me! Thanks for your help and I'll let you know in a few days :)
